Spelling Winners
Jacob, the 14-year-old son of Jim and Patti Meyer, competed against 29 other Boone County students from four schools in fifth through eighth grade. He will represent Boone County in the Midwest Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Omaha World-Herald, on March 15, 2008 in Omaha.
After several oral rounds, Jacob and the runner-up, Dylan Haas of St. Edward, were the only two spellers left standing. Dylan is the 12-year-old son of Marv and Yvonne Haas and a seventh grader at St. Edward Public School.
Jacob won by correctly spelling the final words “filibuster” and “alliteration.”
Kathy Thorberg, Boone County Clerk, was the Spelling Bee official. Miss Cheryl Kuehner served as enunciator for the contest. Serving as judge was Miss Connie Sugden.
The other four finalists for the oral round were Jackson Meyer, sixth grader at Boone Central; Marcus Lee, eighth grader at Boone Central; Trey Mogensen, seventh grader at Cedar Rapids Public School; and Devon Rasmussen, seventh grader at St. Edward Public School.
