Alumni Banquet set for June 14

Albion’s Alumni Banquet will be held this year on Saturday, June14, which is Father’s Day weekend.

The date has been changed from the weekend of June 21-22, which differs from the alumni association’s bylaws.

Progress on hospital project

Workers from Beckenhauer Construction have been making good progress on renovation of the central and eastern sections of Boone County Health Center. Changes have been made in the main reception area, and current work includes installation of heating and air conditioning ducts, electrical and plumbing. New front doors will be installed this summer, and the new MRI machine will be moved into its new quarters by late July.

Mary E. McCormack

Mary E. (Hemmingsen) McCormack, 102, died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Friendship Villa, Spalding. A memorial service will be held in Omaha at a later date.

Ronald D. Molt

Ronald D. Molt, 49, of Suquamish, WA died March 22, 2008 at his home after a short time with cancer. He is prededed in death by Barbara Wright and Clyde Molt.

Dale I. Plummer

Dale I. Plummer, 88, of Central City, formerly of Albion, died Monday, April 28, 2008 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City. Memorial services will be Friday, May 2, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Central City with Reverend Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Central City Senior Center, and condolences can be sent to them at www.wagnerfuneral.com.

On a cool, but sunny and dry day Monday at Wayne State College, four Boone Central athletes were crowned event champions in the 2008 Mid-State Conference track & field meet.
The meet had been postponed Saturday due to cold, wet weather conditions. Athletes took advantage of the improved elements Monday to turn in some stellar efforts - typical of the Mid-State championships. Read more

BC golfers 5th in Lakeview Invite

Boone Central had one individual medalist and placed fifth in the team standings of the Lakeview Invitational golf tournament held April 24 at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.
In a battle of Mid-State Conference teams, Wayne won the event over Norfolk Catholic, 323-329. Catholic’s Keaton Knake (75) edged Greg Pohlmann (76) of Lakeview for individual gold medalist honors.
Senior Bobby Bolin led Boone Central, placing 13th with an 18-hole score of 83. The Cardinals finished with a 350 team total.
Bolin opened with a front-nine 39 before closing with a 44. Junior Bryce Morgan fashioned matching 43s on the front and back sides to post an 86 for the Cardinals.
Senior Taylor Majerus added an 88 and senior Brent Dawson rounded out the team score with a 93. Sophomore Tanner Warner shot 94 in his first varsity meet.

Area Athletes Excel In Goldenrod Track, Field

Molly Paul of Cedar Rapids and St. Edward’s Shavontae Samuels each won two gold medals in the 2008 Goldenrod Conference track & field meet April 24 at Burwell  and Brandon Ray of Spalding/Spalding Academy won one event championship.
In the team races, Cedar Rapids finished third in girls competition behind Burwell and Nebraska Christian. Spalding/Spalding Academy took fourth in the boys division, also won by Burwell.
Paul won the discus competition with a throw of 113-5 and captured the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.6 - just a tenth off her 2008 Albion News area best mark. Paul also placed fourth in the 200 in 27.6.
Samuels topped strong fields in the 100 and 200 dashes, edging SSA’s Corey Thome in the 100 (11.3) and nipping Grant Gebhardt of North Loup/Scotia in the 200 (22.5). Samuels was runner-up to Gebhardt in the 400 dash (50.9) and established News area bests in both the 200 and 400.
Ray won the 3200 meter run with a 10:57.0 clocking and placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:24.0.

Marjorie L. (Morris) Wanek, 84, of Sterling died Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Memorial services were held on Sunday, April 20 at 1:30 p.m. at Tennant Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Reed officiating. Dolores Mary McIntyre, 84, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Friendship Villa in Spalding. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Father Ralph Steffensmeier officiated. Valarie A. Hoover

Valarie Ann Hoover, 51, Albion died Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Funeral services were held  at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Rev. Mary Avidano officated. Burial was at Bonanza Akron Cemetery in rural Albion.

A record crowd of more than 80,000 was on hand for Head Coach Bo Pelini’s first Nebraska football spring game April 19 in Lincoln. There were also more than 250 former Husker players in attendance to watch the Reds defeat the Whites 24-14 in the annual finale to spring practice.
