After fouling a bunt attempt, Ethan Salber roped a bases-loaded single through a drawn-in Neligh infield and drove in the winning run in a 4-3 extra-inning victory by the Albion Senior Legion in its 2008 season opener Wednesday, May 21, at the Albion Sports Complex.
The local Seniors rallied from a one-run deficit to tie the score in the sixth frame and wiggled out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the eighth before scoring the game-winner in the bottom of the inning. Read more

I’m sure it’s safe to say we still vividly remember 9/11. It’s a tragic event forever seared into our memory.
Memorial Day is a time when we pause to remember those no longer with us. This may include victims of that horrible day, as well as those who have lost their lives serving our country through the years and past family members.
There’s another story from 9/11 that has slowly faded from public conciousness, however, and a story of one man’s determined effort to shed light back on those who may have now been forgotten. Read more

Card Golfers Finish Season At State

After delivering its best performance of the season in the B-3 District tournament, the Boone Central golf team could never find its ‘A’ game and solve the Lincoln Pioneers Golf Course layout in the 2008 Nebraska Class B State Tournament May 20-21.
The Cardinals finished at the bottom of the team standings with a 36-hole total of 673 and senior Bobby Bolin led the squad individually, tieing for 23rd with a two-day score of 157. Read more

An electronic time and temperature sign is one of the new features at the Albion Professional Plaza being built for owner Randy Hedlund in southeast Albion. The sign was erected last week.

Albion Family Chiropractic will move into the new building by June 1, and Albion Family Dental Clinic will open there between mid-June and July 1.

Dust was flying in many locations across Boone County last week as farmers took advantage of clear weather that finally allowed progress on corn planting, which has been a long slow process because of all of the rainy days this spring. Many locations have received more than four inches of rainfall in the past month, and fields have been slow to dry enough for planting.

City sales tax receipts set new record

Albion’s city sales tax receipts set a new monthly record in March, 2008.

The city received $53,262.99 in sales tax for March 2008 sales, which surpasses the previous record of $45,656 recorded in December, 2006. Sales tax receipts for the same period a year earlier (March, 2007) were $37,078.50.

“This reflects a very good month of retail sales for our local businesses and appears to be a positive indicator for the future of our local economy,” City Administrator Andrew Devine said.

Total year-to-date sales tax receipts for the period of October 2007 to March 2008 are $355,089.58 This figure is 8.27 percent higher than receipts for the same period a year earlier.

The city sales tax is used to fund the Albion Economic Development Plan, the water tower loan, various street improvement projects - past and present, and the Albion Fire Hall construction project.

Fund drive underway for new Vets Club

A fund drive has begun for the proposed new Vets Club/Legion Hall in Albion.

The new 46 x 80 foot building will be located on the corner of Third and Church Streets in Albion, with the front entrance facing Third Street. At the entrance will be a memorial to each branch of the service.

Anyone, who would like to contribute toward the completion of this facility, can make donations at the Vets Club. Memorial bricks can be purchased in memory of veteran(s) at the club. The fund drive stands at $25,000, and the goal is $200,000.

The Vets Club will also be taking bids for construction and finish work on the building.

The fund drive progress will be tracked in the Albion News.
