Card Softball Team Concludes Regular Season

October 8, 2008

After dropping two games in triangular action at Cross County Tuesday, Sept. 30, the Boone Central varsity softball team closed its 2008 regular season with a 6-3 victory over St. Paul at the Albion Sports Complex Thursday.
The Cardinal week opened with a tough-luck 4-1 loss to the host Cross County Cougars at Stromsburg.
“We were hitting the ball hard to different locations on the field, but we just couldn’t find any openings,” lamented Boone Central Coach Brandon Detlefsen. “We had a hard time gaining any momentum offensively.”

The Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw in the nightcap, dropping a 13-0 decision to 21-3 Twin River in four innings.

Boone Central got back in the win column Thursday with a hard-fought 6-3 decision over St. Paul. The Cards rallied from behind to tie the score in the fifth, then tallied the four decisive runs in a big sixth inning.
“It took a while to gain our focus on offense, but we finally broke through late,” said Detlefsen. “We left eight runners on base and couldn’t capitilize on some situations early.
“When their pitcher began to lose control, we took advantage of the base on balls. Paige Kolm had another fine performance at the plate with two hits and three runs.”
