Courthouse expansion put on hold

Boone County Commissioners on Monday decided to put the current courthouse expansion plans on hold due to possible future changes in staffing and space requirements for Social Services offices administered by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
County Board Chairman Hank Thieman said he was notified last week by a Social Services official of future changes in the agency that would include staff reductions and the likely closing of the Boone County office by 2010. Read more
Halloween events Friday in downtown Albion

This Halloween witch has been greeting customers at Albion Floral & Gift.
A pumpkin decorating contest will be held next Thursday for children up to 12 years old. Contestants are asked to drop off their decorated pumpkins from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Tier One Bank (for toddlers up to two years old), Albion Radio Shack (ages three to five), Boone County Bank (ages six to eight), and Albion Floral and Gifts (ages nine through 12). Prizes will be awarded Friday.
A costume contest will be held on Friday , Oct. 31, at 4 p.m. on the courthouse lawn in each age group. Costumes will be judged in the same age categories as the pumpkin decorating contest.
FBLA members will lead the Halloween Parade at 4 p.m. and downtown businesses will be handing out treats.
Punkin Chunkin’ rescheduled for Sunday

Due to recent rainfall and muddy fields in the area, the Petersburg Community Club decided last week to postpone its annual Punkin Chunkin’TM event, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26.
Punkin Chunkin’ TM has been rescheduled for this Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. in a field just east of Petersburg along Highway 91.

Jim Hutchison
Jim Hutchison, 80, of Cedar Rapids died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Fr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiated. Burial of cremains will be at a later date.
Lorane H. Scheffler
Lorane Hazel Scheffler, 82, died on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Albion. Rev. Blaine Pritchett and Pastor Timothy Stahl officiated. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.
Chester Edwin Olsen
Chester Edwin Olsen, 93, of Miden died on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at the Boone County Health Center. He is survived by son Roger and wife Gayle of Albion; daughter Mary Nelson of Champaign, IL; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Bolin watches approach shot at state
Despite cold, wet weather conditions that plagued players throughout both days of the tourney, Bolin fashioned rounds of 85-80 over the 18-hole Indianhead layout. Her 165 total trailed only champion Danielle Lemek (152) of Doniphan-Trumbull and runner-up Steph Rodgers (161) of Syracuse. Just one other player in the field of 96 managed to shoot below 175.
