Margaret “Peggy” Malander

Margaret “Peggy” Malander, 79, of Fullerton, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Fullerton. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 27 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fullerton. Father Richard Whiteing officiated. A private burial was held.

Loran S. Goodwater

Loran Soloman Goodwater, 89, of Albion, died on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008 at the Boone County Health Center. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Albion. Rev. K.F. Kaleuati    officiated. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.

Christine Gertrude Dubs

Christine Gertrude Dubs, 53, of Tuscon, AZ, died on Dec. 16, 2008. Graveside memorial services will be held for Christine and her mother, Trudi on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward. Rev. Glen Holtz will officiate.

BC Cagers In St. Paul Holiday Tourney

Cardinals Receive Academic All-State Awards

The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) has announced the Nebraska High School students who earned 2008 Academic All-State Awards. This NSAA program recognizes students who meet the criteria for nomination by their school in the season their activity takes place.

Many successes, some disappointments, plenty of excitement.
The past year again provided great entertainment for Albion sports fans and memories that will long live in scrapbooks, memory chips and compact discs.
The 2008 calendar year featured team success (and failure), individual heroics, fantastic finishes, near misses, championship smiles and heartbreaking tears.

County Zoning Administrator resigns

At their meeting Monday, Dec. 29, Boone County Commissioners accepted the resignation of Janet Lawson as Boone County Zoning Administrator.

Mrs. Lawson’s resignation was accepted with regret and thanks for her service.

The resignation will be effective Feb. 26, 2009.

Loup Power customers will see Jan. 1 rate hike

Loup Power District retail customers will be asked to pay more for their electric power beginning Jan. 1, 2009, according to Donald Pearson, chairman of the Loup Power Rate Committee.

The rate increase reflects an increase in the cost of wholesale power to the district from Nebraska Public Power District and increased operational costs of the Loup Power District. Operational costs include cost of materials for operations and maintenance activities, employee costs, insurance costs and other costs, which increase because of inflation.

The district’s overall increase for all retail customer classes is 7.12 percent. Read more

Planning Commission recommends approval of feedlot project

At a hearing Monday, Dec. 22, the Boone County Planning Commission recommended approval of a conditional use permit requested by Cedar Valley Feeding Co. in southwest Boone County.

Feedlot owner Richard VanAckeren requested the permit for holding ponds, non-feedlot water diversions and sediment basins on his property.

His attorney, Jeff Peetz, explained that the construction is necessary to meet state and federal regulations, and the capacity of the feedlot is not an issue in terms of this permit. Read more
