No steam has been rising from the stack at the VeraSun Albion ethanol plant since last Friday night, Dec. 19, causing some speculation about the plant’s status. A VeraSun spokesman said Monday the plant had been idled temporarily, but the workforce will remain in place at this time. VeraSun plants at Central City and Ord were shut down earlier this year. The company is working through Chapter 11 bankruptcy and has received a buyout offer.

The Boone Central girls basketball team entered the 2008-09 season with an experienced roster and plenty of optimism. Early results have not dampened Cardinal hopes in the least.
The Lady Cards continued a nice early-season roll this past weekend, improving to 4-0 with victories over Pierce and Central City.
Coach Mike Kennedy, while pleased with the start, knows there is still work to be done, however.
“We need to continue to work hard on the defensive end of the court and make improvements on our turnover ratio as we continue a very difficult schedule of games,” Kennedy commented. Read more

It may not stack up with the dramatic comeback by Nebraska’s volleyball team last weekend, but in Thursday’s dual wrestling meet against Creighton, Boone Central proved it’s never over until it’s over.
The Cardinals rallied from an 18-point deficit in the final four matches to thrill the hometown crowd with a 42-36 victory.
BC then competed in a difficult York Quad Friday, placing third behind Central City and the host Dukes.
Competition gets no easier this week. The Cards travel to Grand Island Thursday for a dual with the always-tough Northwest Vikings before hosting the annual Boone Central Dual Tournament Saturday that features a field of Boys Town, Plainview, Battle Creek, Tekamah-Herman and Central City. Pierce Shuts Down Cards

Boone Central and Pierce have well-deserved reputations as two of the best defensive basketball programs in Northeast Nebraska.
Friday, the Mid-State Conference rivals took that defensive prowess to the extreme in a 39-22 contest in Albion won by the visiting Bluejays.
In a physical affair that saw chest-to-chest pressure from the opening tip, Pierce used a 10-3 flurry in the third period to break open a tight game. Neither team could get untracked in the first half, but the Bluejays ratcheted up their defense another notch following intermission and allowed the Cardinals just one second-half field goal. Albion Veterans Club building fund drive passed the $130,000 mark in total donations and pledges during the past month.

The fund drive total stood at $130,439, or about 65 percent of the $200,000 goal.

Meanwhile, volunteers are hard at work framing walls inside the building. Bricks were laid last week on the lower portion of the building’s exterior walls last week. The veterans are working toward a spring completion of the new structure.
