Mrs. Krohn has worked in the courthouse for a total of 27 years. She was employed in the Assessor’s office for 13 years before transferring to the Treasurer’s office as Deputy Assessor in 1994. Read more
Albion Chamber installs new president

Due to the weather, only about 60 people attended the combined banquet of the chamber and the Boone County Area Foundation.
Outgoing chamber President Scott Stuhlmiller congratulated Reilly and reviewed the chamber activities for the past year. He noted that the chamber activities contributed to the “tremendous success” of the 2008 Cattlemen’s Ball in Boone County. Read more
School Board to review superintendent applicants

Boone Central School Board will continue its superintendent search process with a special meeting next week.
The board will meet Thursday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. in the Family Consumer Science Room, Albion, to review the list of applicants for the superintendent’s position and select four finalists.
Meetings are planned the following Monday through Thursday, Feb. 9-12, at 6:45 p.m. each evening to conduct open session interviews with each finalist candidate in the high school library.
Mitzi Fox receives Prairie Plains award

Alvena Dorthea Grandt Benson of Albion died on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at the age of 95. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday Jan. 14 at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. Rev. Larry Sydow officiated. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.

Sarah A. Dixon, 99, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Tiffany Square Care Center. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Jan. 17 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. Rev. Mark Maresh officiated. Burial was held in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

LaVerne E. Fustos, 96 of Portland, OR, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Rose Hill Evangelical Free Church, rural Newman Grove. Rev. Clifford Branson officiated. Burial was held in the Rosehill Cemetery, rural Newman Grove.

Richard George Lawson, 69, of Albion, died on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19 at Zion Lutheran Church, Albion with Rev. Larry Sydow officiating. Burial was held in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion.

Richard A. (Dick) Zwiener, 73 of Spalding, died on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 at Boone County Health Center. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 19 at St. Michael’s Church in Spalding at 10:30 a.m. Fr. Joe Hannappel and Fr. Jim Murphy officiated. Military burial was held in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

The Boone Central Lady Cardinals, now ranked 6th in Class C1 by the Omaha World-Herald, gave notice to the rest of the Mid-State Conference that their sterling record and state acclaim were the real deal by thumping traditional girls basketball power West Point Central Catholic Saturday in Albion.
In what was expected to be a showdown of top teams sporting a combined record of 19-2, the Cardinals dominated the second and third quarters and handily defeated Central Catholic 55-40.
That performance followed a 76-34 Cardinal romp over host Madison Friday night. The weekend wins extended Boone Central’s current win streak to five games and boosted its season record to 10-1. Read more
