Tom Pelster receives Hero Award

Tom Pelster of Petersburg received the Hero Award, presented by the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association, for his heroic actions during a July 2007 accident on Highway 14 near the Pelster residence.

It is believed that quick thinking by Mr. Pelster may have saved the life of one of the accident victims. He was nominated for the award by the Petersburg Rescue Squad. Read more

New owners for local Subway

Albion’s Subway store has new owners.

Teri and Gregg Peitzmeier of Neligh, NE, purchased the Albion business effective Wednesday, Jan. 7, from Mary and Keith Bittner of Albion.

The Bittners opened the Albion Subway restaurant on June 16, 1993 at its current location near the intersection of Highways 14-39 and 91.

Teri Peitzmeier trained as manager at the Albion restaurant during its first year of operation.

The Bittners then opened a second Subway on Highway 275 in Neligh on April 25, 1994, and Teri became manager there. Read more

Boone County American Legion held a WWII Heartland Honor Flight soup luncheon on Jan. 11 to raise funds for the WWII Honor Flights. The event raised $1,601, which will be sent to Heartland Honor Flights to ensure more WWII Veterans will be able to make the flight to see their memorial. Boone County exhibit opens at Norfolk museum

An exhibit of Boone County artifacts opened Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Elkhorn Valley Museum in Norfolk. Boone County Historical Society officers attended, along with nine Norfolk residents and Norfolk Mayor Sue Fuchtman. The exhibit includes items from both present and former Boone County communities, with themed displays about the courthouse, veterans, schools, music and Native Americans. A total of 11 handmade quilts are also on display. The Boone County exhibit will be featured through February.

New member joins School Board

Officers elected, four staff members resign 

A new Boone Central School Board member, Roger Rozeboom, was sworn into office during the board’s regular meeting on Tuesday night, Jan. 13, at Petersburg.

Elected in November, Rozeboom replaced retiring board member Tom Briese and begins a four-year term.

A new slate of board officers was also elected. Karen Kayton will replace Larry Temme as president. Patti Meyer was elected vice president, and Tim Preister was elected secretary-treasurer for the coming year. Read more

Chamber, Foundation joint banquet set Sunday

Albion Chamber of Commerce and the Boone County Area Foundation will hold a joint annual banquet this Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at the Albion Country Club.

The evening will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by supper and entertainment by the Boone Central speech team.

Scott Stuhlmiller will be completing his term as president, and Scott Reilly will become the new president for 2009.

Boone County Area Foundation will also have a presentation.

Choral Clinic provides music, fun

Boone Central’s 64th annual Choral Clinic on Monday evening provided fun for both the audience and participants. A total of 486 students from 16 area high schools participated this year. Boone Central’s Swing Choir (above) was one of eight small groups to perform during the concert.
