Pat and Wayne Boilesen and the Boone County Historical Society hosted an open house at the historic Boilesen home in Albion last Sunday, Jan. 11.

The evening included musical entertainment by Pat Boilesen (piano, guitar and vocals) and Paul Hosford (hammer dulcimer).

The Historical Society also hosted a special guest speaker, Carla Patterson, an anthropologist who is helping with a program to assist local museums through the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

Green Line Equipment Inc. last week announced its purchase of Central Nebraska Implement Inc., the John Deere equipment dealer in Albion and Spalding. The sale will be effective Jan. 28, 2009

Green Line was established in 1967 and currently operates stores in Grand Island, Central City, Aurora, Norfolk, Plainview and Neligh.

The company will be expanded to eight stores when this sale is finalized. Read more

A new photography business, Two Girls and A Camera, recently opened at 410 West Church Street in Albion.

Owners Tonja Agee, Beth Plisek and Tina White are offering all types of photography. Their services will cover the range from senior portraits and studio portraits, to weddings and other special occasions.

Their office will be staffed five days a week, and they will be available to travel in the evenings and on weekends, by appointment.

City mail routes realigned here

A dramatic decline in mail volume has prompted recent Albion postal route adjustments, said Tracy Stamp, Albion postmaster.

“With the economy the way it is, it affects mail volume immensely,” said Stamp.

Consequently, the U.S. Postal Service implemented cost-effective postal route and delivery changes. These adjustments allow the postal service to remain viable and provide consistent mail delivery, Stamp said.

In Albion, these changes resulted in redistribution of the town’s two postal delivery routes, “City 1″ and “City 2.” The redistribution did not affect rural routes surrounding Albion, Stamp said. Read more

Boone Central Choral Clinic is Jan. 19

Boone Central High School will host its 64th annual Choral Clinic next Monday, Jan. 19, in the school gym.

Nearly 400 students from 16 area schools will be attending. Dr. Kurt Runestad, director of Choral Activities at Doane College, Crete, NE, will be guest clinician.

The annual concert is scheduled in the Boone Central Gym at 5:30 p.m. — earlier than it has been in past years.

Cedar Rapids bridge gains funding priority

Boone County has received notice that repair of the county bridge over the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids will be among the top priority projects for Transportation Enhancement funds this year.

Nebraska Department of Roads notified Darrel Thorin, county highway superintendent, of its prioritization in a letter, and Thorin provided details to the County Commissioners at their meeting Monday, Jan. 12.

The county bridge, which was originally built to carry traffic from Highway 56 through Cedar Rapids, was closed last year after the structure was deemed unsafe. Read more

Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids took the oath of office as the new state senator in Legislative District 41 on Wednesday, January 7, and began her four-year term of office.  Sullivan was elected in November to succeed Vickie McDonald of St. Paul who retired due to term limits.

“There’s one promise I know I can deliver on. I will work hard to be a strong senator and spokesperson for District 41 and rural Nebraska,” she said. “I will do my very best to represent the interests of the district and to make good, common sense decisions to help Nebraska become a better, stronger state.”

Mrs. Sullivan is the first state senator from Boone County since 1947, when the late Glenn Cramer of Albion stepped down after nine years of service.

Boone Central wrestling mentor Dale Bonge was pleased with his charges last week, saying the team gave its best performances of the 2008-09 season in the Aurora Quad and High Plains Invitational.

The Cardinals placed second in the quadrangular at Aurora with three BC wrestlers claiming first place in their respective weight classes. Boone Central had one individual champion, one runner-up and seven overall medalists in the tough High Plains meet this past weekend. Read more
