Vote for your favorites in ‘Polar Bear Dip’

Boone County residents can vote for their favorite officer from the Sheriff’s Department to take a “dip” in the icy Cedar River this week.

Cedar Rapids is preparing for the fifth annual Toma Rutten Polar Bear Dip this Saturday, Feb. 21, and voting boxes have been placed at locations throughout the county.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department will be represented by the officer getting the most votes in the ballot boxes placed around the county.

Lighting of the bonfire will be at 2 p.m., and the “Polar Bears” will jump in the river starting at 3 p.m.

Other events will include chili judging, a soup supper, an “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” contest and a dance.

School Board picks Norfolk principal as new superintendent

Boone Central School Board last week picked Cory Worrell of Norfolk as their top candidate for the superintendent of schools position.

A formal motion to hire Worrell as superintendent for next year is on the agenda for the board’s regular meeting tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Family Consumer Science Room of the high school. Read more

Elementary classes called off due to flu bug

Flu has been hitting hard in Boone County recently.

Due to absences caused by the flu, classes were canceled at Boone Central Elementary last Thursday and Friday, Feb. 12-13. Read more

A capacity crowd filled Werner Hall in Petersburg Friday night, Feb. 13, and Elvis tribute artist Joseph Hall “rocked the house” in his two-hour show.

The event was a benefit for the new Albion Veterans Club. A total of 425 people attended, and organizers said the event was their biggest fund-raiser so far. It raised about $6,500 for the building fund.

Susan K. Packard, 46, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at her home. A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Betty Ann Johnson, age 86, of Lincoln, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 in Lincoln. Funeral services were held at Roper and Sons Chapel on Monday, Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. Rev. David Lux officiated. Following services, she will be cremated and inurned with her husband and daughter Leslie in Lincoln Memorial Park. Memorials may be directed to the University of Nebraska Foundation. June Kathryn Cooper, 58, Omaha, died on Feb. 5, 2009.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 10:30 a.m., at the Lutheran Church of the Master in Omaha.  A graveside service was held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 1:30 p.m., at Westlawn Cemetery in Omaha. Donald J. Hestekind, 74 of Elgin, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at his home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at Huffman-Levander Funeral Home in Elgin, with military honors by American Legion Post # 229 and VFW Post 5816 of Elgin and the United States Air Force Honor Guard.

When Boone Central raised the Mid-State Conference tournament trophy Saturday night at Northeast Community College’s Cox Activities Center in Norfolk, the Lady Cardinals officially donned the crown that has so often been passed between perennial Class C girls basketball powers West Point Central Catholic and Norfolk Catholic.
It took a strong finish in a 65-54 victory over feisty Hartington Cedar Catholic in the title game for Boone Central to break that stranglehold and capture the first Mid-State Conference girls basketball championship in school history. Read more

Although the Boone Central wrestling team did not have enough ammo to challenge for the team title, the Cardinals nonetheless turned in a strong performance in the annual Mid-State Conference tournament Saturday at Norfolk.
With just nine wrestlers competing, Boone Central placed third in the eight-team field while seniors Tyler Iverson and Dustin Martin were crowned 2009 conference champions.
In all, seven of the nine Cardinals competing medaled in the competition and earned praise from Coach Dale Bonge. Read more

The Boone Central boys basketball team had its mid-season winning streak stopped at seven and settled for fourth place in the annual Mid-State Conference Tournament Feb. 2-7.
After scoring a dramatic last-second victory over West Point Central Catholic in the opening round of the conference tourney Tuesday, the Cardinals were stymied by Class C1 #2 Pierce in Thursday’s semi-final.
Boone Central, shorthanded due to illness, then dropped a rematch with Battle Creek in the consolation contest one week after defeating the Braves on their home court. Read more
