VeraSun to sell ’substantially all assets’

VeraSun Energy Corporation announced Monday that it has filed a Bid Procedures and Sale Motion in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware seeking authority to sell substantially all of the assets of VeraSun Energy Corporation and 24 of its affiliates through a court-approved sale process.

As part of the sales process, the Company has signed an agreement with Valero Energy Corporation to sell substantially all of its assets relating to the VeraSun production facilities in Aurora, SD; Charles City, Fort Dodge, and Hartley in Iowa, and Welcome, MN. All five of these facilities are currently operating. The company also seeks to sell a development site in Reynolds, IN, as part of the deal. Read more

BCHC Foundation Gala to feature Shawn Watson

Signing day may be over and spring ball around the corner, but Husker fever is in full swing in Albion with the announcement that the hospital’s foundation is featuring Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson at its fundraising event on Sunday, March 8, in the Event Center at the Boone County Fairgrounds, Albion.

The event, called the Big Red Gala, is the Health Center’s biennial fundraiser, with proceeds going for the foundation’s priority project. This year’s project, the upgrading of radiology equipment in digital mammography, which is used for breast cancer screenings and diagnostic purposes, is the foundation’s largest equipment campaign undertaken so far. Area businesses ‘challenged’ in Vets Club drive

A “Business Challenge” is being included in the Albion Veterans Club building fund drive.

Area businesses are invited to contribute any amount to the building fund, and all gifts are appreciated.

For contributions of $125 or more, a brick inscribed with the business name will be included in a section of the Wall of Honor at the new Veterans Club. Read more

‘Polar Bear Dip’ coming up Feb. 21

Cedar Rapids will be hosting the fifth annual Toma Rutten Polar Bear Dip on Saturday, Feb. 21.

 A special Valentines Concert, “Jill Nore and Friends,” was presented Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. Several of the selections were written and composed by Jill Nore, the featured artist. Others performing were Paul Hosford (bass), Whitney Jones (violin), Annie Baum (vocalist), Dawn Bussey (vocalist), Brynn Nelson (piano), Alison Kern (cello) and Curtis Luettel (drums). More than 150 people attended the Albion Arts Council production.

School Board picks four finalists for superintendent’s post

At a special meeting Tuesday night, Feb. 3, the Boone Central School Board selected four finalists for the superintendent’s position and scheduled open public interviews next Monday through Thursday, Feb. 9-12.

The finalists were chosen from among 16 applicants for the position.

Following are the finalists and the schedule for interviews next week:

Clayton Waddle of Red Cloud, NE, currently K-12 Principal at South Central Nebraska Unified School District/Lawrence/Nelson, will be interviewed on Monday, Feb. 9, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the high school library. Waddle has previously served as K-6 Principal in Red Cloud Community Schools, and as a high school teacher and technology coordinator at Louisville Public Schools.

Thomas Becker of Pilger, NE, currently Superintendent and K-6 Principal at Emerson-Hubbard Community Schools, will be interviewed on Tuesday, Feb. 10, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the high school library. Becker has previously been a Secondary Principal at Emerson-Hubbard, and as a teacher at Ogallala Public Schools.

Steve Dennis of Ord, NE, currently Elementary Principal at Ord Public Schools, will be interviewed on Wednesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the high school library. Dennis has previously served as Elementary Principal at Creighton Community Schools, and as a sixth grade teacher at Ansley Public Schools.

Cory Worrell of Norfolk, NE, currently Elementary Principal at Norfolk Public Schools, will be interviewed on Thursday, Feb. 12, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the high school library. Before becoming a principal, Worrell was a second grade teacher at Grand Island Public Schools.

Lucile Bowman Younce Zeller, 87, died on Jan. 7, 2009 in Centennial, CO. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Feb. 20 at 1:30 p.m., Christ Lutheran Church, 2695 S. Franklin St., Denver, CO.

Margaret (Peg) Reeder

Margaret (Peg) Reeder 69, of Cedar Rapids died Jan. 24, 2009 at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Mgsr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiated. Burial was held in the parish cemetery.

Russell D. Smith

Russell Delatus Smith VII, 85, of Primrose died on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Norfolk. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Fr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiated. Military rites were conducted by Sam Kinnier Post #347 of Primrose and Dan Cox Post #44 of Cedar Rapids. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Richard L. ‘Dick’ Krohn

Richard L. “Dick” Krohn, 58, of Albion, died Friday, Jan. 30 at his home in Albion. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. Fr. Stan Schmit officiated. Burial was held in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Albion, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #162 and VFW Post #736 of Albion.
