Boone County farmers joined many others throughout Nebraska in making good progress on planting corn and soybeans last week. This photo was taken southeast of Albion last Thursday, April 23. The pace was slowed by cooler temperatures and rainfall over the weekend. Corn planting progress was estimated at 15 to 20 percent in Boone County early this week.

Commissioners to negotiate building purchase

Boone County Commissioners decided Monday to negotiate the possible purchase of the former SourceGas office building in downtown Albion, rather than pursue a lease agreement for office space in the Albion Professional Plaza.

The board is proceeding with purchase of the former SourceGas building across Fourth Street, east of the courthouse, which is intended to house the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Social Services.

The decision to move Social Services out of the courthouse was made last month when commissioners decided to pursue renovation of the present courthouse building, rather than an addition. Read more

Be on watch for Swine Flu

State, federal and regional health agencies are urging Americans to be on the watch for swine flu.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency last Sunday after some 1,600 confirmed cases in Mexico had resulted in 103 deaths.

Emergency response plans have been activated by both the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the North Central District Health Department (NCDHD).

Facing tough competition and difficult conditions, Boone Central’s track & field athletes continued to improve times and marks in the Grand Island Northwest Invitational Thursday, April 23.
Temperatures edging into the 90s and winds gusting over 30 miles-per-hour made Thursday’s meet a challenge for some of Central Nebraska’s best Class B and C athletes.
Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel was pleased with the way her charges responded.
“The weather took a turn and went almost too far to the warm side,” Pestel noted. “Along with battling stiff competition, the high temperatures made things a little difficult for the kids.
“However, the whole idea of track & field is to improve and they continue to up their performances at every meet. The work ethic in all the kids, in all disciplines, is showing.” Read more

Although Hartington Cedar Catholic and Norfolk Catholic distanced themselves from the remainder of the Mid-State Conference field, Boone Central was in the thick of the battle for third place, eventually finishing fifth in the meet held at Norfolk’s Fairplay Golf Course Saturday, April 25.
The Cardinals compiled a team score of 341, just four strokes back of fourth-place Battle Creek and seven behind Wayne. Cedar Catholic won the conference team championship with a 316 score, four strokes ahead of Norfolk Catholic. Read more

Community cleanup set Thursday, April 23

An annual community cleanup in Petersburg will be held Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

Those attending are asked to meet at the downtown park. Bring rakes, but bags will be furnished.

Cleanup is sponsored by Keep Nebraska Beautiful and the Petersburg NCIP.

A potluck meal will follow and those helping are asked to bring a covered dish.

Petersburg’s early warning system to be tested

Petersburg Civil Defense Coordinator Vet Stuhr will be testing the Petersburg warning system on Friday morning April 24 at 10 a.m., weather permitting.

The siren will sound uninterrupted for three full minutes.

If a tornado was actually approaching, this continuous sounding of the siren would indicate immediate danger and the need to take shelter. There will be no all clear sounded. Read more

Temme to lead Radiologic Technologists

Petersburg native James B. Temme, director of radiation science technology education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE, has been elected by members of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists to serve as president-elect of the society.

Temme currently serves as ASRT’s vice president on the ASRT board of directors. His tenure as president-elect will commence following the conclusion of the 2009 ASRT annual governance and House of Delegates meeting, June 11-14 in Albuquerque, NM.

As president-elect, Temme will work with ASRT’s seven members board to represent the association’s 131,000 members and govern the organization’s strategic iniatives.
