Goals such as improving business opportunities for young people and stabilizing population are common among rural Nebraska communities.
A team approach has been taken in Ord and Valley County to accomplish these goals and more, said Caleb Pollard, 29-year-old executive director of the Ord Area Chamber of Commerce and Valley County Economic Development Board.
Pollard was invited to a joint meeting of the Albion Economic Development Corp. and Albion Chamber of Commerce last Thursday, June 21, at the Junction Restaurant. He leads the development efforts aimed at “growing our own” businesses using a Hometown Competitiveness model. One major effort now underway is to establish a Central Community College campus in Ord, featuring a Rural Entrepreneurship Academy. Read more
Hazardous waste collection is Saturday

Paint, chemicals, fertilizers and many other household hazardous wastes will be collected in Albion this Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the north side of City Hall.
Acceptable hazardous waste items are paints, stains, varnishes, lawn chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, mercury and mercury related materials, computers (two per family), batteries, used motor oil, prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and fluorescent bulbs.
Items not accepted include commercial and agricultural waste, gasoline, farm chemicals, tires or antifreeze. Read more
Decoration Day event successful at museum

A very successful “Decoration Day” event was held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at the Boone County Museum.
A total of 60 to 70 people attended the afternoon event, which featured ice cream sundaes, tours of the museum and digital video interviews with Boone County World War II era veterans about their wartime experiences.
“We received many good comments and I was very pleased with the way things went,” said Pat Boilesen, president of the Boone County Historical Society. “We hope to have a similar event at the museum on an annual basis.” Read more
Pat Beierman receives Mini-Park Flag honor

Patricia Beierman of Albion received the Mini-Park Flag Award during Memorial Day ceremonies Monday, May 25, on the Boone County Courthouse lawn.
An American Flag, flown in her honor over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, was raised at Albion’s downtown mini-park after the Memorial Day ceremony. On behalf of the local veterans’ organizations, Dale Bowman also presented a bronze plaque, which was installed at the mini-park to commemorate Pat’s honor.
On every Memorial Day, the award is given to recognize the service of a member of either the American Legion Auxiliary Manderson Lehr Unit #162 or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Post #736. Read more

Margaret Lucille Hellbusch, 93, of Albion, died Monday, May 11, 2009 at Cloverlodge Care Center, St. Edward. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Albion. Fr. Stan Schmit officiated. Burial was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Marie L. Michel, 65, of Ephrata, PA, died at her residence on Sunday, May 10, 2009. A Life Celebration Memorial Service was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. Rev. John W. Morris officiated. Interment was held in St. John’s Episcopal Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Marie’s name to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, PA 17603.

On a beautiful day at Pierce High School, Boone Central qualified 15 athletes in 16 events for the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships to be held Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, at Omaha Burke Stadium.
That represents a considerable leap from 2008 when Boone Central had just three representatives in Omaha.
While amassing its qualifier list, the Lady Cardinals placed third in the B-4 team standings behind champion Columbus Scotus and host Pierce. Lacking that team depth, the BC boys still finished a solid fifth in the 11-team event. Read more
Boone Central Golfers Struggle At Fullerton

After a trend of improving performances, the Boone Central boys golf team took a step backward at the Fullerton Invitational Tuesday, May 12.
Cardinal Coach Jesse Brodersen gave a succinct assessment of his team’s day.
“The boys just didn’t play real well - not a good warm up for district,” he commented.
Boone Central placed seventh in the 12-team field at Fullerton with a team score of 361. The host Warriors won the tournament with a 328 total, followed by St. Paul and Central City, both at 338.
Cardinal senior Bryce Morgan finished sixth individually, carding an 80 over the Pawnee Hills Golf Club layout. Individual champion was Fullerton’s Brian Pomplun with a 74.
Rounding out scoring for Boone Central was Dusty Dozler (89), Collin Chaney (96) and Tanner Warner (96).
Boone Central competed in the C-3 District tournament Tuesday at Plainview Country Club. A total of 14 teams comprised the district field.
