Early deadlines due to holiday

Due to the Memorial Day holiday next Monday, May 25, the Albion News and Petersburg Press will have early deadlines for the May 27 edition of the newspapers.

All news and advertising must be submitted by 3 p.m. on Friday, May 22, to be included in next week’s newspapers.

The offices will be closed on Monday for the holiday.

Boone Central to honor retirees

An open house reception will by held in the Boone Central High School multi-purpose gym to honor retiring educators on Thursday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Retirees are Sandy Fricke, high school family and consumer science teacher, Larry Lambert, superintendent, Pat Naber, middle school FACS teacher and media specialist, and Mary Theiman, middle school principal. See Page 4 this week for more on the retiring educators.

Alumni Weekend events are set

A wide variety of activities will be featured during the Albion/Boone Central Alumni Weekend, Friday and Saturday, June 19-20.

Following is the finalized schedule of events:

Friday, June 19

  • Stock Car Races, 8 p.m., Boone County Raceway
  • Karaoke at Junction 14-91

Saturday, June 20

  • 2009 Cardinal Run — 5K; two-mile Fun Run/Walk, and one-mile Kids Run, starting at 9 a.m. Registration forms at Boone County Fitness Center, or contact Nicole Levander, Boone County Health Center, 395-3165.
  • Breakfast Buffet at Junction 14-91, 9 a.m.
  • Four-Person Scramble Golf Tournament at Albion Country Club. Registration at Country Club Pro Shop, 395-2900.

Zoning changes needed for new housing development

New zoning changes will be implemented in the housing development on the west edge of Petersburg. A public hearing will be held at the Boone County Courthouse on May 26, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

At the May 5, 2009 Village Board meeting, John Zwingman, engineer consultant said, “The amount of contract work you can complete without seeking bids is $30,000.”

Each proposed residential lot will be three-quarters of an acre. The land survey will be completed and the price of the land has been decided.

Lighted sign to be capstone project

Members of the Petersburg Leadership Development Challenge met May 7, 2009 and decided on their “capstone” project. The project selected will be the erection of an electronic lighted sign which will display events, meetings and social events of Petersburg.

There were many good suggestions for the type of project, but one had to picked as a requirement of the class. A fund-raiser will be held on Saturday, July 25. More information will be given at a later date as committees are set up.

The “fun day” committees will meet to do planning and on May 28, at 7:30 p.m., the LDC class will meet again.

Robert Fay Reynoldson, 85, of Albion, died on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion. Funeral services were held at the Albion United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 5, with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery.  

Carol Streeter

Carol Streeter, 84, of Columbus, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha. A memorial service was held on Thursday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Wayne Jacobsen and Rev. Dr. Jim Wooten officiated. Interment was held in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

Lavaugne E. “Lou” McKay

Lavaugne Ellen McKay, 92, of Elgin, died on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at Boone County Health Center, Albion. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 at the Elgin United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Davis officiated. Burial was held in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Robert Culbertson

Robert Culbertson, 88, of Fort Worth, TX died Thursday, April 30. Funeral services were held at Thompson’s Harveson and Cole Funeral Home in Fort Worth, TX on May 4, 2009.

Therersa C. Kerkman

Theresa Catherine Kerkman, 102, of Albion, died Monday, May 4, 2009 at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center, Albion. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg. Rev. Stan Schmit officiated. Burial was held in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

Second grade students in Angie Simpson’s science class at Boone Central last week planted flower seeds and bulbs in planter boxes along the west side of the school. The second graders sold the most bulbs in the bulb sale sponsored by the Boone Central Parent-Teacher Organization this year, so they earned the right to plant the bulbs at school.

VeraSun pays taxes in full

Mark “Paid in Full” on Boone County property taxes owed by VeraSun Energy Corp.

On Friday, May 8, the company paid both its full 2008 property taxes and the accelerated portion of 2009 personal property tax due on the ethanol plant southeast of Albion.

The company paid total taxes of $2,415,551, which included eight days of interest charges on the 2008 first half property taxes that were due May 1, 2009, according to County Treasurer Laurie Krohn.
