Bloodmobile coming to Albion, Petersburg

Albion will host a visit of the Red Cross Bloodmobile next Monday, July 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds, Casey Community Building.

Cedar Locker reopens

After being idle for an extended period, the Cedar Rapids Locker in Cedar Rapids is now back in operation.
Brian Yosten purchased the locker plant in June of 2008 and spent several months looking for an individual or group to purchase it from him.
“I did not want to have someone buy the locker and liquidate the equipment,” said Yosten. “Then, Cedar Rapids would more than likely never have a locker again.” Read more
Sales tax receipts down for April

Albion’s retail sales tax receipts for April 2009 indicated another steep decline from the same month one year ago, but ranked about even with the previous month, March 2009.
Total sales tax receipts for April were $35,651, a decline of more than $14,000 or 28 percent from the April 2008 total of $49,830.
Young actors shine in ‘Alice in Wonderland’

The production featured 58 young actors and actresses from a wide area that included Albion, Columbus, Fullerton, Gretna, Lindsay, Lincoln, Petersburg, St. Edward. One young performer came from as far as Colorado. Read more

Commissioners ‘cap’ zoning fees

After hearing from a potential wind power developer Monday, the Boone County Commissioners decided to modify their schedule for zoning permit fees adopted last week.
Steve Boyer, representing Third Planet Windpower, said the company’s wind field proposals submitted to NPPD and OPPD earlier this year reflected the county’s previous much lower zoning permit fee.
Under the new fee schedule set to begin July 1, wind developers could pay nearly $750 per tower for wind generators valued at $2.9 million each. Read more
City street work to start early

Albion’s city street projects will be starting this week, several weeks earlier than originally planned.
The contractor, Castle Construction, is ahead of schedule and therefore has announced plans set up equipment and begin work this week. The work was originally scheduled to start July 27.
The concrete paving projects will be on Marengo Street, Main Street, Depot Street, and the intersections of Walnut and First and Walnut and A Streets. The company will likely start on Marengo Street.

Children of all ages participated in races and games during opening night of Carnival Days last Tuesday, June 23. This young lady was reaching the finish line in the “Diaper Derby.”
