NPPD plans meetings on new transmission lines

Information meetings are planned July 2 at Petersburg and Ericson on proposed new electric transmission facilities to serve the TransCanada Keystone XL crude oil pipeline through Nebraska.
A breakfast meeting will be held at the Petersburg Legion Club at 7 a.m. on July 2, and a luncheon meeting is planned at Starving Stallion in Ericson at 12 noon.
The meetings will be hosted jointly by Nebraska Public Power District, Loup Valleys Rural Public Power District, Cornhusker Public Power District and Loup Power District. Read more

A total of 260 people attended the 53rd annual Alumni Banquet on Saturday night. Mary Qualset, class of 1937 (left) was the oldest alumnus present. Pat Henderson (right), a member of the class of 1954, traveled the farthest from her home in Seattle, WA. They both received gifts from the alumni committee.

Children’s theatre production this Saturday

Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Alice in Wonderland will be presented this Saturday, June 27, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Boone Central Gym, Albion.
A cast of about 50 children were to be selected at auditions Monday, June 22, and rehearsals are scheduled throughout the week from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. at the school.
The production is sponsored by the Albion Area Arts Council with support from the Mansfield Foundation, Mid-America Arts Alliance, National Endowment for the Arts and the Nebraska Arts Council.

Mary Patricia Miller
Mary Patricia Miller, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died on Friday, June 12, 2009 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Msgr. Ralph Steffensmeier officiated with burial in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Primrose. Condolences may be sent to www.levanderfuneralhome.com.

Chris Tenski of St. Edward forged another tie in the Hobby Stock point standings Friday at Albion’s Boone County Raceway, with Bryant Borer of Petersburg lurking just three points back.
Borer used a runner-up feature race finish to thrust himself squarely into the season point dogfight while Tenski (8th) and Kimmel (10th) struggled Friday night. Read more

“Some good ol’ things still fun”
Mauer digs in for the 2-2 pitch as Span dances off second base … the pitch, just misses low and away, that will run the count full with two outs here in the bottom of the sixth … Mauer steps out of the box … gorgeous day here in Seattle, the clouds have drifted away and its clear blue all the way to the heavens … big pitch coming up for Washburn, facing the AL’s leading hitter, a runner in scoring position and a 2-2 tie … Mauer back in, Washburn shakes off the sign, shakes off another, Span sneaks another half step, Washburn into the stretch … here’s the pitch …
Many of you “older” fans are probably familiar with the good ol’ baseball radio broadcast. The younger generation? Not so much.
I have to admit - I love to listen to baseball games on the radio. In fact, I enjoy them more than I do watching a baseball game on television.
With a televised game, I find myself distracted, often reading a book or magazine or browsing the internet while keeping half an eye and ear on the ballgame.
However, with a radio broadcast - and, this is the key, a good announcing team - I seem to pay attention, aborbing the descriptions and banter while the action comes alive in my head. Read more
Petersburg’s Carnival Days is underway!

Petersburg’s annual Carnival Days celebration is underway this week, June 23-25, featuring the D. C. Lynch Carnival and many activities for young and old alike.
Tuesday events: Junior High Mud Volleyball, 4 p.m.; Flag Raising, 7 p.m.; Center Stage Dancers perform at 7:15 p.m., followed by Kids Races.
Wednesday events: High School Mud Volleyball, 4 p.m.; Flag Raising, 7 p.m.; Youth Obstacle Course at football field, 7:15 p.m.
Thursday events: Dodge Ball at tennis courts, 4 p.m.; Free Barbecue, 6 p.m.; Flag Raising, 7 p.m.; ‘Are You Smarter than a BC Middle School Student?’ will follow at 7:15 p.m.
Buses will run from Albion to Petersburg and back, for youth who would like to participate in the events.
