St. Edward students were at Holocaust Museum when shooting occurred

June 16, 2009

St. Edward High School students may not have all happy memories of their recent trip to Washington, DC, because they witnessed a significant and unsettling event while there.

The 21 students and their three adult chaperones were at the Holocaust Museum in Washington when 88-year-old white supremacist James von Brunn shot and killed a security guard there last Wednesday morning, June 10.

The students were finishing their tour there when the shooting occurred. Six of the students were inside the building, while five were inside the restroom just down the stairs from the museum’s entrance.

The other 15 and sponsor Jeremy Jones were on the bus outside the museum. After hearing gunshots, the bus driver drove away, but not before students saw von Brunn lying on the ground outside the building after he had been shot by a second security guard. Read more

TIF financing explained to Village Board

June 9, 2009

Chairs were filled at the June meeting of the Petersburg Village Board. Chairman Tony Thieman called the meeting to order and opened the public zoning meeting for the proposed housing addition to Petersburg. Petersburg Industrial Development member Hank Thieman said, “The land has been posted with the public hearing notice for 15 days and legal notices have been published in the newspaper. We are asking that the parcel of land which includes nine acres and presently listed as light industrial be reclassified as R-2.” The development is looking to purchase five of those nine acres. However, they would like the extra acres rezoned to square up the town and be available, if needed.

With no other discussion and allowing for one hour before a board decision, they moved onto the TIF (Tax Increment Financing) portion of the meeting with a presentation by Michael Bacon, an attorney from Gothenberg. He called attention to the NCIP awards on the wall saying, “Someone is doing a lot of good work here.” Read more
