Norfolk’s Robert Osborne of Norfolk won another 2009 BCR feature to add to his Late Model lead and Dylan Smith of Osceola kept a stranglehold on the Modified division with a runner-up A Feature run Friday. Read more

Baseball Passion Alive & Well
Several weeks ago in this space I pondered the fading presence of American Legion baseball in Albion and other communities in our area and around the state.
I received many comments in regard to that column and my thoughts on the subject. More comments, in fact, than any column I’ve tapped out in quite some time.
My conclusion from that response and the nerve my words apparently touched?

Rain slows some construction plans

Depot Street construction
In the above photo, Depot Street was busy with excavation work last Friday, July 24. After removal of the old concrete, storm sewer pipes were installed under the street. Concrete paving was expected to begin later this week, weather permitting, on Depot and Main Streets, the final project to be built by Castle Construction this summer in Albion.
A planned excavation for a sanitary sewer on South Sixth Street, including the Sixth and Fairview intersection, was delayed by the rain Tuesday, July 28. When the excavation begins, Sixth Street traffic will be detoured west of the Boone County Health Center.

Pork producers face tough times
July 28, 2009
Tough economic times are continuing for the hog industry, and that is translating to reductions in some parts of the United States.
However, spokesmen for two large hog producers with operations in the Boone County area say they are planning and working to weather the storm.
“We are determined to be in the market for the long term,” said Ryan Mead, who handles recruitment and community relations for Progressive Swine Technologies (PST).
Mead said PST has not cut any positions at any of its operations.
“It’s more important than ever for our facilities to operate as efficiently as possible,” said Mead. “There are constant changes in our industry. We have great people who are always striving for better efficiency. We try to make all our company investments with the long-term in mind.”
The importance of efficiency and the long-term view were echoed by Scott Burroughs, chief operating officer of Nebraska Pork Partners (NPP).
NPP has streamlined its overall operations, both in terms of hog numbers and labor force, according to Burroughs. The company recently closed a 2,200-sow facility in Boone County due to both swine health and economic concerns. However, employees of that facility have remained with the company in other capacities, he said.
“We do plan to restock that facility at some point in the future,” said Burroughs.
Travis, Kayton volunteer with SMILE

Shelby Travis, left, and Kallie Kayton
They began volunteering at the SMILE Therapeutic Riding Program in Battle Creek last summer after reading about the program. This is their second summer helping the riders.
There is a very wide range of disabilities and handicaps that the riders may have. Each young rider is paired with a volunteer, and if the disability is more severe, more volunteers may be assigned to the rider.
The volunteers help the young riders through an eight-step program that includes brushing the horses down and putting the tack on them. Then they help the riders mount their horses and help them ride. Some riders are able to ride on their own, where others must have help staying on the horse during the ride.
“I like seeing them improve,” says Shelby. “We had a boy at the beginning of last summer that couldn’t hold his head up, and by the end of the summer he was holding his head up straight, looking at all the horses.”
