Jr. Legion Gains Experience in Tourney

Koziol cracks hit
Despite scoring just a single victory in four games at the Central City Tournament June 26-28, Albion’s young Junior Legion baseball team felt it had a pretty successful weekend.
The local Juniors, using a number of players of Pony League age, gained valuable experience by engaging in nip-and-tuck dogfights in three of the four contests.
After a shutout loss to Grand Island Five Points Bank, Albion was edged by one run in the final frame by Shelton/Gibbon, topped host Central City with a big seventh inning and dropped a close decision to York Cornerstone Blue when the game was called at the time limit.
The Albion Juniors will continue their 2009 season Thursday, hosting Aurora at the Albion Sports Complex (7 p.m.).
G.I. 5 Pts 8, Albion 0
Albion’s opening loss in the Central City Tournament Friday, June 26, was simply a case of too much Jake Brunner.
Brunner, G.I. Five Points Bank pitcher, allowed Albion just three baserunners - two on walks and one by error - in twirling a five-inning no-hit 8-0 victory.
Shel./Gib. 10, Albion 9
Albion’s first game Saturday saw the Juniors stage a sixth-inning rally in a wild affair, only to lose a 10-9 heartbreaker in the seventh to Shelton/Gibbon. Albion’s Logan Olson was hit by a pitch in the seventh and advanced to third base before a pair of strikeouts left him stranded. Shelton/Gibbon took the win in the bottom of the frame, using an Albion error, hit-batsman, wild pitch and fielder’s choice to score.
Albion 8, C. City 6
The Albion Juniors scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the final frame to notch an 8-6 victory over host Central City later Saturday. Central City chipped away at the early 4-2 Albion lead, scoring twice in the third, once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to edge ahead 5-4.
Albion broke the drought in the top of the seventh. Jacob Olson led off with a walk and, following McLean reaching by error and a Luettel single, Anderson and Brett Temme each plated two runners with consecutive doubles. Albion had a chance to do more damage, but left the bases loaded.
Central City scored once in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs before Temme recorded his sixth strikeout to seal the win.
York 15, Albion 12
Albion and York Cornerstone Blue lit the scoreboard like a pinball machine Sunday until the contest was called by time-limit rule, York prevailing 15-12. A big Cornerstone fourth turned the contest in the York team’s favor. The Cornestone squad scored nine times to take a 15-6 lead, then held off a determined Albion rally.
