Margaret Regina Liekhus, 91, of  Norfolk, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Care Center, Norfolk. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Msgr. Ralph Stephensmeier and Fr. James Liekhus officiated. Burial was held in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to www.levanderfuneralhome.com.

Four new drivers will hoist first-place trophies in 2009 following Friday’s Championship Night at the Boone County Raceway in Albion.
In fact, only one of 2008’s defending champs finished in the top five of their respective classes this season. That turnover was inevitable in the Hobby Stock division, as 2008 winner Bryan Molt moved to Late Model competition, and LM class, where Mark Lueken competed on an abbreviated scale in 2009. However, ‘08 Modified champion Jason Gaver finished well down the point standings this time around, leaving only Humphrey’s Randy Hooker in serious contention for another title in Street Stock competition. June sales tax receipts nearly equal last year

Albion city sales tax receipts for June 2009 were nearly equal with the same month in 2008, according to figures recently released by the Nebraska Department of Revenue.

May city sales tax receipts were $43,421, a decline of $884 or less than two percent from the May 2008 total of $44,305.

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, the city’s sales tax receipts totaled $492,294, an increase of 1.38 percent from the previous year’s total of $485,597.

The city’s motor vehicle sales tax receipts for June at $3,559 declined by less than one percent from June of 2008, when total motor vehicle receipts were $3,587.

Motor vehicle sales tax receipts for the fiscal year totaled $41,685, a decline of 5.61 percent from the previous year’s total of $44,164.

Fur harvesters plan convention here

Nebraska Fur Harvesters are planning their annual convention at the Boone County Fairgrounds, Albion, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25 and 26.

The convention is expected to attract about 800 participants, including members, spouses and vendors.

The convention will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Many area residents attended and participated in the Rae Valley Heritage Association’s 27th annual Nebraska State Antique Tractor and Horse Plowing Contest last Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24, west of Petersburg. The event featured a wide variety of activities, including horse-drawn and antique tractor plowing, discing and planting. There were also many demonstrations like the Voborny’s working sawmill (above). Ideal weather conditions helped attract a large crowd to the grounds both days.

Oldtime farming techniques and antique machinery were featuerd at the Rae Valley Heritage Association’s 27th annual Nebraska State Antique Tractor and Horse Plowing Contest last Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24, west of Petersburg. The event featured a wide variety of activities, including horse-drawn plowing, discing and planting. Above photo shows Mike Mortensen of Neligh with his draft horse team, pulling a disc in a newly plowed field.

Boone County wins $320,900 grant for housing rehab

Boone County officials were notified Tuesday that the county has been awarded $320,900 grant from trust funds from the Nebraska Affordable Housing Program Homebuyer Program. Through this program, five homes will be purchased, rehabilitated, and resold to families at or below 100 percent of the area‘s median income.

This project is a collaborative effort between the communities in Boone County. Local governments and agencies participating were Albion, Cedar Rapids, Petersburg, Primrose and St. Edward, Boone County, Boone County Development Agency (BCDA), Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District (NENEDD) and NeighborWorks Northeast Nebraska (NWNEN).
