A new 115kV power transmission line will likely be built in 2011-12 from Petersburg to Ericson to serve the electrical needs of a pumping station for the TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline.

At a public open house in the Petersburg American Legion Hall last Wednesday night, Nebraska Public Power District was informing the public about this project. The power district was also seeking help from area residents to determine the best route for the new transmission line.

Opportunity to help one of our own …

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really grown to enjoy the stories of athletes and coaches using their positions to help others less fortunate.
Oh, sure, we still see numerous headlines documenting the seamier side of athletics. But, for every Plaxico Burress, Michael Vick, Dontae Stallworth or Rick Pitino, there are dozens of shining lights, such as Kyle Petty, Dikembe Mutumbo, Tony Dungy and David Robinson, making the world a better place.
I’ve written previously in this space about causes I’ve become enamored and involved with, including Petty’s Victory Junction Gang Camp and George Martin’s “a Journey for 9/11”. And, of course, in Nebraska, we’re all familair with the annual Shrine Bowl and its support of Shriners’ Childrens Hospitals across the nation.
All these causes are great ones and I know many of you are involved in similar projects and charities. But isn’t it always just a little more satisfying when you can help one of your own? Read more

What do you get when you mix excellent barbecued meat and vegetables with fun games, entertainment, wine and beer tasting, and happy winners? You get a successful event: “Petersburg’s Bash in the Burg.”

An estimated 250 to 300 people attended all the days’ festivities last Saturday, Aug. 15.

There were many games for children and adults. A dunk tank was a popular event. Several locals ended up in the water, and some of them were ‘dunked’ almost 40 times during their time slot. A Bounce House provided by Sentinel Building Systems entertained the children.
