More wind energy is expected to be added to Nebraska Public Power District’s energy portfolio in the near future.

One of those wind projects will be in Boone County.

Last Friday, NPPD’s Board of Directors authorized entering into power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiations with Midwest Wind Energy/Edison Mission Midwest. NPPD will seek an agreement for 80 megawatts of wind-powered generation from a site near Petersburg.

The district is also interested in negotiating an agreement for a second project northeast of Broken Bow, NE, to also be developed by Midwest Wind Energy/Edison Mission Midwest, if NPPD can find other utility participants to purchase up to half of the output of the total projects.

It is expected that once negotiations are concluded, NPPD would approve final contract(s) later this year. The facilities would be operational by the end of 2010 or early in 2011.

New Season In The Air …

I hope you didn’t blink and miss it, summer has officially come and gone.
Oh, we’ll have some warm - reeeeaaaally warm - weather yet, but the fall sports season is upon us and schools are opening. If you didn’t squeeze that vacation in - sorry.
As much as I hate to see summer fly by, I can never get upset at the onset of the new season. Probably because it’s my favorite time of year. Read more

Giant Pumpkin Growing Tips — August 2009

August 12, 2009

By Jim Leifeld

Some growers are reporting rapid growth on their selected pumpkins. We have one that measures 24 inches long and 67 inches in circumference. 136 pounds.

Only work in your patch in the warmer part of the day when the leaves are dry. Keep that giant growing by keeping plenty of water on it. Do your watering to the vine with soaker hoses rather than a sprinkler, to stop fungus and other diseases from starting. If you are getting any disease, stop in and we will fix you up with whatever you need. You also should be watching for cucumber beetles and squash vine borers. If you are having trouble with the beetles, we have a trick for you to stop them. A yellow bucket with soapy water in it will attract and trap them! We can get you the right pesticides and the proper way to use them. If you do get some dead leaves from insects or disease, remove them from the vine and move them away to stop further infestation.

Village Board adopts three new ordinances

August 11, 2009

Petersburg Village Board met last Tuesday evening, Aug. 4 and passed three new ordinances involving the creation of a Community Development Agency, amending the official zoning map, and, approving a lot split.

Zoning Director Barb Hansen explained that rezoning of the proposed new housing site must reflect the future use of the land to make zoning official. Hansen stated, “We don’t have to completely undo the zoning, there’s no real problem.” She will also inform the school district of the subdivision. The I-1 area has been rezoned to higher residential. The change will be made to the future land use map. Hansen stated, “There was a misunderstanding with the first survey.”

The board also passed a TIF financing ordinance which allows the village to create the Community Development Agency in the Village of Petersburg. This board will elect a chairman, vice chairman and have power to employ counsel and a director. Michael Bacon will assist with set up at a cost of $10,000.
