Ardene Ella Zumbrunn, 79, died on Sept. 22, 2009 at her home in Albion. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Inez Elizabeth Mock, 78 of Albion, died on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Albion. Rev. K. F. Kaleuati will officiate. Friday was a great day for running and competitors in the Boone Central Individual Invitational cross country meet took full advantage.
Leading the way was Cardinal senior Kevin Carder, who broke the all-time Albion/Boone Central record in the boys 5,000-meter race. A pair of remarkable Card freshmen also established school marks - Cassidy Pribnow equaling the Boone Central girls record and Calvin Koziol setting a new boys frosh standard.
Along with local runners, Holy Family soph Andrea Weeder, the defending Class D state champion, broke the course record over the Albion Country Club layout and senior Kevin Weeder, also a defending state champ, won a scintillating duel with Carder to claim top spot in the boys senior division.

Speed usually produces big plays on the football field. And big plays often add up to success.
Such was the case Friday night in Albion as visiting Centennial parlayed touchdown strikes of 37, 56, 40 and 83 yards into a 41-13 victory over the Boone Central Cardinals.
Boone Central (0-4) had some of its better offensive success of the season, as well, but the Cardinals again lost the turnover battle (0-2) and allowed the swift Broncos to amass 321 passing yards. Read more

Card Softball Team Notches Two More Wins

After dropping its first two games in the Mid-State Conference Tournament at Wayne Monday, Sept. 21, the Boone Central softball team concluded the event with a victory over Lutheran High NE Tuesday, then improved to 6-17 in 2009 by blanking host High Plains Thursday. Read more

Central Community College, Columbus campus, recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and during a special program on Tuesday, Sept. 22, James B. Temme of Omaha was given the 2009 Outstanding Alumni Award.

James (Jim) is currently the Associate Professor and Associate Director of the division of radiation science technology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. In addition to his current job, he serves as President of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. He was instrumental in formulating a program where CCC-Columbus students can complete their Bachelor’s Degree in radiologic technology while working at the Columbus Community Hospital. Read more

On Thursday, Sept. 17, the Nebraska 4-H Foundation held its fifth annual Pulling for 4-H sporting clays fund-raiser at the Oak Creek Sporting Club near Brainard. There were 105 shooters from across Nebraska who took part,

The shoot helped raise over $10,000 for Nebraska 4-H Clubs and camps.

The champion individual shooter, shooting 56 out of 60 targets, was Butch Allen of Ainsworth. First place required a tie-breaker and Dustin Heins of Columbus was runner-up shooting 56 of 60, and third place went to Marvin Koch of Petersburg, who shot 55 of 60 targets.

Couple opens J-Max Surplus in Albion

A new store, J-Max Surplus, has opened at 112 South Fourth Street in Albion. This is the former location of The Outlet.

Owners John and Diana Maxfield of Fullerton said their store offers a variety of merchandise, including guns and ammunition, new clothing and general merchandise.

The store opened for the first time on Sept. 17, and it will be open Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Maxfields moved to Fullerton about five years ago from Denver, CO, where they lived for 25 years. John, a native of Burwell, NE, was in the wholesale business for 25 years in Denver. Diana, a Denver native, was a teacher there.
