Clarence WernerPetersburg native gets ‘Face on the Barroom Floor’

Clarence Werner
Fun-lover, philanthropist and a great competitor. That was the verbal portrait painted of C. L. Werner as the movers and shakers of the trucking industry led the salute to the Omaha Press Club’s 122nd Face on the Barroom Floor.
The actual portrait-caricature, of course, was unveiled by Jim Horan, longtime Face artist. More about that later.
Founded in 1956 by a 19-year-old with a single truck, Omaha-based Werner Enterprises has grown into one of the five largest truckload carriers in the United States, with coverage extended worldwide.
In addition to his business success, Werner’s civic generosity has made a major impact in the Omaha area -most notably his contributions to Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
But the emphasis at the OPC roast and toast was on the non-trucking adventures of Werner and his friends. Hunting, fishing and Crown Royal tales dominated the remarks from the trucking who’s who. A musical bonus was “King of the Road,” sung (somewhat) by “C. L. and the Singing Directors” of Werner.
Clarence is a native of Petersburg and the son of Hugo and Louise Werner of Petersburg.
