Huskers have classwork to finish
Well, the first quarter is in the books and its time to add up your grade.
Let’s see, first quiz … a B+, not bad. Okay, quiz number two … A-, an improvement, good work!
Now, first major test … looks like … an incomplete?
Now, that’s unfortunate. It appeared you were going to have a very good mark at the quarter point, one that would have really helped your class ranking and given you confidence for the rest of the year as the curriculum continues to get more difficult.
However, as you know, you must always finish your work … if you don’t hand in the completed product, you can’t receive the A or B - or W - that you were really after. Read more
C.L. Werner honored at Omaha Press Club

Clarence WernerPetersburg native gets ‘Face on the Barroom Floor’

Clarence Werner
Fun-lover, philanthropist and a great competitor. That was the verbal portrait painted of C. L. Werner as the movers and shakers of the trucking industry led the salute to the Omaha Press Club’s 122nd Face on the Barroom Floor.
The actual portrait-caricature, of course, was unveiled by Jim Horan, longtime Face artist. More about that later.
Founded in 1956 by a 19-year-old with a single truck, Omaha-based Werner Enterprises has grown into one of the five largest truckload carriers in the United States, with coverage extended worldwide.
In addition to his business success, Werner’s civic generosity has made a major impact in the Omaha area -most notably his contributions to Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
But the emphasis at the OPC roast and toast was on the non-trucking adventures of Werner and his friends. Hunting, fishing and Crown Royal tales dominated the remarks from the trucking who’s who. A musical bonus was “King of the Road,” sung (somewhat) by “C. L. and the Singing Directors” of Werner.
Clarence is a native of Petersburg and the son of Hugo and Louise Werner of Petersburg.

Health Dept. director outlines H1N1 plan
September 22, 2009
Plans for dealing with the H1N1 flu in east central Nebraska were outlined for the Boone County Commissioners Monday by Rebecca Rayman, executive director of the four-county East Central District Health Department.
Rayman reported that about 18 percent of students at Columbus High School were absent due to illness on Monday. This is presumed to be mostly H1N1 flu, because the seasonal flu won’t begin until later in the fall.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are not recommending school closings due to H1N1, which has been a relatively mild disease for most people who have contracted it so far. Read more
