The weather begins to be a little chilly with cool mornings and some snow recently. The leaves turn their many shades of yellow, orange, and maroon garnering a splendor of spectacular colors. Fall harvest is in progress. The end of October nears, and what does that mean?

It’s time for Petersburg’s annual Punkin’Chunkin’TM.

For the past five years, Petersburg’s Community Club has sponsored the annual Punkin’ Chunkin’TM. It is held in conjunction with the World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’TM Association. Punkin’ shooter winners in the local contest are eligible to compete in the national competition.

Machines can shoot, launch, throw or fling a 6-12 lb. pumpkin. Community volunteers or club members drive four wheelers through the corn or soybean fields and measure distance shot by a Global Positioning System (GPS). Longest distance shot in 2008 was 3,071 feet from an air gun.

There are four divisions: air gun, mechanical, trebuchet and catapult. A $500 award is given for the longest distance. Petersburg State Bank puts up $500 for a chance to win during the accuracy contest. There is no entry fee, and safety rules apply. There is a high school division where a trophy is awarded. No explosives are allowed.

Crowds cheer on their favorite teams and approximately 2,000 people attended last year’s event.

The action begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, one mile east of Petersburg. There is free admission, and many free activities are available for the whole family. A shuttle service is available from the parking lot, so bring your favorite lawn chair and come and enjoy the day.

In an effort to reduce the potential for serious traffic accidents on Highways 39-14 southeast of Albion, the Boone County Commissioners adopted a resolution Monday seeking lower speed limits in that area.

Commissioners said they are particularly concerned with high traffic volume at the 260th Street highway intersection.

Specific recommendations by the commissioners were:

  • A speed limit reduction from the current 55 miles per hour to 45 mph on Highway 39, starting 225 feet southeast of the 260th Street intersection;
  • A speed limit reduction from the current 45 mph to 35 mph on Highways 39/14, beginning 210 feet southeast of mile marker 122.

The board will forward this resolution to the Nebraska Department of Roads and present it at the NDOR district program planning meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Norfolk.

City Council lists priority sites for possible lagoon

October 20, 2009

Albion City Council approved a list of sites and rankings for a proposed new wastewater treatment lagoon last Tuesday evening, Oct. 13.

The council also decided to make inquiries with landowners for potential purchase of each of the top three sites.

In August, the council had selected a facultative lagoon and land application system as its preferred system for replacing the present mechanical treatment plant. Council members also decided to add several criteria to the site ranking system for the lagoon.

At Tuesday’s meeting, a new ranking of possible sites, based on 11 criteria, was approved by the council. Included in the top three sites are two locations southeast of Albion near Highway 39 and one location northwest of town bordering Old Mill Road.
