Leadership Challenge surpasses $30,000 goal

Petersburg Leadership Challenge Committee has surpassed its goal of $30,000 to build the new electronic marquee sign along Highway 14 in Petersburg.

The sign has been ordered, and further donations will be used for sign maintenance.

The fund drive total now stands at $31,644. Recent donors have included Stuhr’s Quick Stop, Diamond Oil Co. and Dale Salber Services LLC.

Chamber, Foundation Banquet is Sunday

A joint banquet of the Albion Chamber of Commerce and the Boone County Area Foundation will be held this Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Albion Country Club.

The evening will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by the supper and entertainment by the Boone Central speech team.

An announcement will be made of the recent commitment by the boards of the Albion Economic Development Corp. and Albion Chamber to pursue a joint operating arrangement with a full-time director during the coming year.

City sales tax receipts up in November

Albion’s city sales tax receipts reached a record high for the month in November 2009.

Total receipts were $37,125, an increase of 23 percent over November 2008 and up four percent from October 2009.

The total marked the highest November city sales tax receipts on record.

Three more incuments file for re-election

Three more incumbent Boone County officials filed for re-election during the past week.

Boone County Assessor Joyce M. Sock and Dist. 3 County Commissioner Hank Thieman filed for office. Both are Democrats.

Ellen Hirsch, a Republican, filed for re-election as Clerk of the District Court.

BCHC to continue free H1N1 clinics

The H1N1 flu virus has had a very moderate impact in the Boone County area, and a free immunization program by Boone County Health Center has played a key role. To date, the hospital has vaccinated without cost more than 1,600 individuals in schools, businesses, senior centers and walk-in clinics.

BCHC plans to continue providing free H1N1 vaccinations each Wednesday afternoon at the hospital as long as the vaccine supply lasts.

Architecture students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were back in Boone County last Friday, Jan. 22. Professor Martin Despang brought his fourth year students to the community of St. Edward, where they were treated to a meal and learned more about St. Edward at the library before touring the community. In the above photo, they are studying information on a community center, which they will be designing. The students will also be working in the Petersburg and Albion communities this semester to design innovative and energy-efficient public buildings.

Mildred “Millie” L. Condreay, 79, of Columbus died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at Omaha Nursing Home in Omaha. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. Rev. Glen Holtz officiated. Burial was held in Evergreen Cemetery, St. Edward. Candice Marie Fleek, 63, of Bridgeville, CA, died at her home on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. A memorial service was held Thursday Jan. 14 at Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna CA.
Candy was born Nov. 14, 1946.

Elva Z. M. Matchett

Elva Zelda Mary Matchett, 99, of Loretto died on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Albion. Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiated. Burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion.

The Boone Central Lady Cardinals, ranked 4th in Class C1 (Omaha World-Herald) bounced back from their initial loss of 2009-10 to defeat Columbus Scotus and Ord last week, improving their season record to 12-1.
Boone Central now enters a key stretch of the campaign, with conference tests this Thursday and Friday vs. Norfolk Catholic and Battle Creek, followed by the annual Mid-State Conference Tournament Feb. 1-6 in Norfolk.
“We’re pleased to be 12-1 and to earn the #1 seed in the Mid-State Tournament,” acknowledged Lady Card Coach Mike Kennedy. “We will have two tough conference games this week and we look forward to the challenge.” Read more
