Senior Julian Kunzman shouldered the scoring load for Boone Central (5-8) with 27 of the 51 Cardinal points, while his teammates provided solid defense and rebounding and chipped in enough offense to eke out the decision. Read more

County Board declares ‘disaster’
January 19, 2010

Big drifts and one-lane roads, like this example west of Albion, are common in Boone County.
The county declaration will be forwarded to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, and the county could be eligible for reimbursement of some extra costs if a statewide disaster is declared.
County Emergency Manager Mike Thiem and County Highway Superintendent Darrel Thorin provided an initial estimate of $130,000 for county expenses during the 16-day period.
Most of the additional cost is for snow removal on county roads, which includes labor, equipment use, fuel costs and repairs.

Businesses, organizations contribute to Food Pantry
January 19, 2010
Boone County area residents were very generous in donations to the Boone County Food Pantry through the holiday season.
Contributions were received from area schools, businesses and individuals during the past two months, said Nancee Krohn, one of the pantry managers.
Recent contributors included Junction 14-91 Restaurant in Albion, with 10 percent of its proceeds from Nov. 19, and Cedar Rapids State Bank, with collections of food and monetary donations during the Christmas season.
In 2009, the pantry served 115 families or individuals — an increase of 25 families from 2008. The highest volume of clients was in January, June and August, Krohn said. The food needs of all clients were met.
The pantry now has a small freezer, and it can accept contributions of frozen meat that has been USDA inspected.
The pantry is open Thursdays at 1104 West State Street (former USDA building) in Albion. For information, call Nancee Krohn or Sue Sydow.
