Keno on ballot? Village Board says ‘yes’

Petersburg Village Board held a special meeting Wednesday evening, Feb. 17, to discuss the proposal of adding Keno to the May primary ballot.

After a lengthy discussion with proponents and a representative of Keno Nebraska, the board unanimously approved a motion to place the issue on the ballot.

Petsche joins Northeast CC Board of Governors

Shirley Petsche of Petersburg with an employment history in health care and economic development has been appointed to the Northeast Community College Board of Governors.

Following unanimous vote last week, Petsche was seated on the board to fulfill the unexpired term of the late Nanci Lingenfelter of Plainview.

She will represent District I of Northeast’s 20-county service area.

City sales tax revenue strong in December 2009

Albion city sales tax revenue increased in December 2009 for the second consecutive month.

Total receipts were $59,947, for an increase of 13 percent over the December 2008 total of $53,127, and up 61.5 percent over the November 2009 total of $37,125.

Sales tax revenue for the last six months of 2009 (July through December) totaled $257,433, and were down 9.3 percent from the 2008 July through December total of $283,827.

Motor vehicle sales tax receipts for December 2009 were also strong at $2,590. The total was up 16 percent from December 2008 but five percent below the total for November 2009.

Current “cap-and-trade” energy legislation, now pending before Congress, would kill jobs and hurt agriculture, according to Third District Congressman Adrian Smith.

He met with about 15 constituents at Julie’s Restaraunt in Albion Tuesday evening, Feb. 16.

His primary message was that cap-and-trade would hurt both rural economic development and agriculture at a critical time.

“The economy needs to be the priority right now,” said Smith. “Job creation is the key.”

Parent-Teacher Conferences set March 2 at Boone Central

Boone Central School will hold Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, March 2. There will be no school for K-5 grades that day due to the conferences.

Middle school and high school (sixth-12th grades) will have conferences from 4:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the high school multi-purpose gym in Albion.

Elementary students will have conferences on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Scheduled appointment times will be assigned.

County Board approves road plan

Boone County’s 2010 road improvement plan includes 16 projects, but nine of those will be done by the wind farm construction company to facilitate installation of the Laredo Ridge wind generation project in the county’s northern portion.

County Commissioners on Monday approved the one and six-year road plan as proposed by Darrel Thorin, county highway superintendent.

‘Polar Dip’ again successful

Many “Dippers” again plunged into the icy Cedar River during the annual Polar Dip at Cedar Rapids last Saturday, Feb. 20. As the participants splashed into the water, a crowd estimated at 200 people watched from the bank.

The Toma Rutten Memorial event raised money for a college fund for Toma’s children, Kaimyn and Hunter, along with funds for the “Cedar Cares for Kids” account, which is used to help area families recover from emergencies such as accidents, injuries, illnesses or deaths.

A chili contest, soup supper, singing bee and dance were also part of the day and evening events.

Harold G. Belgum, 96, of Albion died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at his home. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 22 at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Rev. Mike Kern officiated. Interment was held at Immanuel-Zion South Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #44 and V.F.W. Post #736.

Sophia Anna Becker, 107, of Albion, died on Feb. 17, 2010 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Zion Lutheran Church, Albion. Rev. Larry Sydow and Rev. Mike Kern officiated. Interment was held at Trinity Cemetery, Newman Grove. Memorials are suggested to the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion.
