NPPD signs agreement to buy wind power from Boone County

February 17, 2010

Nebraska Public Power District, along with Midwest Wind Energy, LLC, Edison Mission Group (EMG), and EMG affiliate Laredo Ridge Wind, LLC, last week announced a 20-year power purchase agreement, paving the way for construction of an 80-megawatt wind farm near Petersburg.

The purchase price per kilowatt hour was not divulged. An NPPD spokesman said this is “proprietary information” because Midwest Wind Energy has other wind farm projects pending in Nebraska. NPPD said the purchase price is comparable to its cost of buying electricity on the open market.

The Laredo Ridge Wind Energy Project is planned for completion by the end of 2010.

A big winter storm spoiled Valentine’s Day for many area residents. Driving conditions turned ugly across much of eastern Nebraska early Sunday morning, Feb. 14, and the storm continued through Sunday night.

Winds of up to 45 mph caused drifting and “white outs” with zero visibility on area highways and county roads. Several multiple vehicle accidents were reported, including a five-vehicle accident on Highway 14 in northern Boone County. Above, a car abandoned during the storm sits on the edge of Highway 91 in eastern Boone County.

Low numbers, inexperience and injuries made the 2009-10 season a difficult one for the Boone Central wrestling team.
Those factors made it especially tough for the Cardinals this past weekend in the loaded B-2 District mat tournament at Schuyler.
The shorthanded Cardinals, with just seven wrestlers competing, finished at the bottom of the team standings in what was considered the toughest Class B district field in the state.
Sophomore Jacob Meyer kept Boone Central from being shut out on the medal stand and will represent the Cardinal program at the 2010 Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha after placing 4th at 119 pounds Saturday. Read more
