‘Husker Hoops’ here April 9

A special event, featuring Nebraska Cornhusker senior football players and 11 area high school senior basketball players, will be held Friday, April 9, at the Boone Central Gym in Albion.

Proceeds will help fund the Boone County Health Center’s Project Care and Comfort.

City plans hearing on blight study

A public hearing on a downtown study that found the area to be blighted and substandard will be held during the Albion City Council’s next meeting on April 13.

The blighted/substandard study was completed several months ago by Hanna:Keelan Associates under contract with the city.

The council will consider a resolution to declare the downtown area blighted and substandard for redevelopment purposes.

An Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Albion Chamber of Commerce attracted 115 area children last Saturday, March 27.

The hunt was held at Good Samaritan Society - Wolf Memorial Home and Samaritan Estates for children up to age nine.

Road conditions are prime topic for commissioners

A group of about 15 Boone County farmers met with the county commissioners and Darrel Thorin, county highway superintendent, Monday, March 29, to discuss the present county road conditions and possible improvements that could be made.

Paul Groeteke introduced the discussion on behalf of farmers, saying there is frustration about some road situations in the rural community, and the group is seeking some avenues for improvements.

Groeteke noted that winter blizzards and the rapid thaw created some disaster conditions.

Architecture student Benton Cooper shares his performing arts center design.
UNL third and fourth year architecture students, along with Professor Martin Despang, returned to Boone County to display their work to the public last Saturday, March 27.

Their first stop was the St. Edward Community Center, to show designs for a new community gathering place.

In the afternoon, the students displayed designs for a possible new performing arts center on the southeast corner of the Boone Central School grounds in Albion.

Olympic medalist to present program here

Winter Olympics gold medal bobsledder Curt Tomasevicz, a native of Shelby, NE, will present a program, “Finding Your Own Personal Success,” at the Boone Central High School Gym on April 26 at 7 p.m.

Additional details on Tomasovicz and his program will be announced in the coming weeks.

Cunningham re-elected

Bernie Cunningham of Petersburg has been re-appointed as a member of the statewide Nebraska Community Improvement Advisory Board. She will be working with Christina Bartels, NCIP coordinator and other board members to further evaluate and improve the NCIP program.

Each member on the board assists communities with understanding and navigating the steps for participation, provides outreach to past NCIP participants in an effort to encourage the community to renew their participation in NCIP, and provides feedback and suggestions about the program at the end of the NCIP year.

Cunningham said, “Petersburg is well into the 2009-10 program year and is “cookin” as usual. We can be proud of our long and successful participation in NCIP.”

Elizabeth Birdie Pollock Weed, 98 of St. Edward, died Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the United Methodist/Presbyterian Church  in St. Edward. Rev. Glen Holtz officiated with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in St. Edward.

Dennis Daniel Werts, 76, died on Monday, March 22, 2010 in Albion. Funeral services were held Friday, March 26 at the St. Edward Catholic Church in St. Edward. Fr. Jim Novotny officiated. Burial was at the St. Edward Catholic Cemetery.

James “Jim” Badorek

James “Jim” Badorek, 59 of Grand Island, died Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13 at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel.

Raymond C. Salber

Raymond Charles Salber, 85 of St. Edward, died Monday, March 22, 2010 at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion. Fr. Stan Schmit and Fr. Jim Novotny officiated. Burial was held in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post #162 and VFW Post #736 of Albion. Condolences may be sent to www.levanderfuneralhome.com.
