Cardinal, Area Track & Field Teams Off & Running

The Boone Central girls and boys track & field teams opened their 2010 spring seasons at the Madison Relays Tuesday. The Cardinals and other area teams will be in action at the annual Mansfield Invitational Thursday, April 1, in Albion. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., with running events starting around noon.
Area Cagers Receive Postseason Honors

Boone Central’s Bobbi Beckwith and Melissa Berger of Spalding/Spalding Academy were recently named to the G.I. Independent’s All-Heartland Girls Basketball Super Squad and a number of Albion News area athletes have received regional and state awards for their play during the 2009-10 season.
Beckwith, a 5-9 junior guard, averaged 11.4 points, 3.1 assists and 2.1 steals for Boone Central’s 20-4 state tournament qualifier. Cardinal Coach Mike Kennedy commented, “Bobbi is a leader by example. She is quiet by nature, but sets an example with her work ethic”.
Berger, 5-4 senior guard, poured in 17.1 points per game for Spalding/Spalding Academy (14-9) and scored 1,231 career points. Knight Coach Stephanie Wlaschin had high praise for her star, “I hate to see Melissa go as a coach. She’s not only a great athlete, she’s an even better kid. She’s a positive role model, not just on the court, but in the community.” Read more
Husker Hoops Tip Off April 9 In Albion

Under the watchful eye of volunteer coach Pat Larsen, 11 area high school seniors have practiced for their upcoming game against University of Nebraska senior football players in the Husker Hoops event Friday, April 9, at the Boone Central High School gymnasium in Albion.
Proceeds from the event will help fund the Boone County Health Center Foundation’s 2010 Project Care & Comfort.
Project Care & Comfort will fund both medical equipment and furnishings for two private patient care suites in the hospital’s new patient care addition. The two new suites are designed for terminally or seriously ill patients needing extended care. Read more

Primrose firemen battle hay bale fire.
Round hay bales on a semi tractor-trailer had caught fire. Neighboring farmers used tractors to remove the bales from the trailer and spread them out so firemen could extinguish the flames.
The fire sent a cloud of smoke across Highway 91. Boone County Sheriff’s Department provided traffic control.
Appreciation Brunch to lead off special events in Petersburg

A customer appreciation brunch this Saturday, March 27, will lead off several special events coming up in Petersburg.
The appreciation brunch, featuring pancakes, eggs and sausage, will be served in the Petersburg Legion Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Petersburg Community Club each year to show appreciation to everyone who supports the community by shopping in Petersburg.
Foundation Barbecue
On the following Tuesday, March 30, the Petersburg Area Foundation and Petersburg State Bank will sponsor a free barbecue from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Petersburg Legion. Doug Friedli of the Nebraska Community Foundation will give a short presentation at 7 p.m. on how local residents can give back to Petersburg and help insure its future.
Easter Egg Hunt
The annual Petersburg Community Club-sponsored Easter Egg Hunt will be Saturday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m. in the Petersburg Park. Children up to age 10 are invited to participate and will be divided by age groups. Each child is asked to bring a container for the candy and eggs.

Albion Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday, March 27, at Good Samaritan Society, Albion.
Registration will start at 9 a.m., with the hunt beginning at 10 a.m.
As in past years, youngsters will be divided into age groups for the hunt, which will be held on the grounds at both Wolf Memorial Home and Samaritan Estates.
Architecture students to present work

Architecture students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be presenting their models and design ideas in St. Edward and Albion this Saturday, March 27.
The first presentation of models and ideas for a new community center/gathering place for St. Edward will be held at 10 a.m. in the St. Edward Community Center.
The second presentation, on a possible new performing arts center for Albion, will be held at 1 p.m. in the multi-purpose gym at Boone Central Public School.
These are two of the three projects the third and fourth-year architecture students are working on in Boone County this semester. Their third project is to design a new grocery store for the Petersburg community.

Doris E. Majerus
Doris Eileen Majerus, 87 of Central City, formerly of Petersburg, died on Monday, March 15, 2010. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 18 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City. Monsignor Nelson Newman officiated. Burial was held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Condolences may be sent to www.levanderfuneralhome.com.
Edwin H. Heft
Edwin H. Heft, 87 of Columbus, died Monday, March 22, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. at North Park Baptist Church in Columbus. Reverend Lyn Hanson will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 25 from 3-7 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held Friday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Cedar Rapids with military honors by the Dan Cox Legion Post #44.
