Petersburg Fire Dept. gives tips on severe weather season

April 27, 2010

Petersburg Fire Department would like to remind everyone that severe weather season is here, and it’s time to prepare your storm shelter and have a emergency plan in place.

If a large storm area is affected, you could be trapped in your shelter for a prolonged time. Items recommended for your shelter include drinking water, non-perishable food items in a container easily opened, battery-powered radio and flashlights, extra batteries, blankets and coats because it may get cold.

If there are children, be sure to have toys, games, or stuffed animals since this will be a terrifying time for them.

Also, be prepared to take along any needed medications and have a receptacle to use as a bathroom. A whistle is recommended since the sound can be heard from a distance away. Also, be sure all shelter doors open inward because there may be debris in front of the shelter door.

If you don’t have a shelter, you are reminded that the church basement is open at all times, and the Petersburg State Bank’s basement will be open during normal banking hours. Also, if a storm shelter or basement isn’t available go to an interior room, closet or lay down in your bathtub with quilts over you.

It’s also a good time to check with your neighbors to see if they have a shelter. Let a neighbor know if you will be out of town, so time will not be spent searching for you.

Residents must remember that it’s time to get to safety immediately when the siren blows. The signal is a three-minute sounding of the siren with NO all clear being sounded.

Property owners want damage repaired

April 27, 2010

Last winter’s blizzards deep snow accumulations caused problems for county road crews clearing roads.

In some areas, county crews pushed snow through fences and onto private property in order to move it away from roads.

On Monday, the county board received a request from farmers Alvin Luettel and Ken Kerkman, who asked that the county clean up the posts and wire from the ditch and fenceline, and to help repair the damage.

They were referring to property along 140th Street, west of Petersburg, where they said about one-half mile of fence was destroyed and a shelter belt was damaged.

 Meeting Gen. Petraeus a highlight

Albion’s Norm and Donna Smith have traveled to many parts of the United States to meet with Norm’s World War II compatriots and commemorate important milestones.

Their mid-April trip to Washington, DC, will rank among the most meaningful.

The Smiths participated in a commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps during World War II. It was held in the nation’s capital April 14 and 15 as an opportunity to thank and honor those who participated in the liberation.

Among the 120 veterans present, Norm was the only one representing the 101st Airborne Division, and one of his purposes in attending was to provide documentation that the 101st had liberated Landsberg Camp, a Nazi labor camp for Jewish prisoners.

One of the highlights for the Smiths was an opportunity to meet General David Petraeus, who led the 101st Airborne during the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom and now serves as commander of the U.S. Central Command.

“That was totally unplanned and unexpected,” said Norm.
