Nebraskans experienced typical hot, muggy weather conditions Sunday and drivers from the Lucas Oil/American Sprint Car Series only turned up that heat in their debut performance at the Boone County Raceway in Albion.
Brian Brown of Grain Valley, MO went to the front from the 8th starting position in the feature race, picking up the $3,000 winner’s share in the ASCS Midwest Region series event held in conjunction with the 2010 Boone County Fair.
Brown took command of the 25-lap feature at the midway point and wheeled the No. 21 FVP Maxim to his 14th career ASCS Midwest victory. Giltner’s Chad Humston rallied from the 11th starting slot to finish 2nd while Doug Lovegrove, Tyler Drueke and Jason Danley rounded out the top five.
Eric Lutz was in control for the initial seven circuits of the feature race before retiring to the pits with engine issues. Lovegrove assumed the point at that time and held on until Brown sped to the lead on a lap 13 restart following a turn four tumble by Ryan Roberts.
Brown and Danley opened Sunday’s card by winning the ASCS heat races. Brodie Tulloch and Lutz took honors in the night’s qualifying races.
ASCS Midwest points leader Jack Dover scratched from Sunday’s main event with engine problems, but still holds an advantage over Lutz and Lovegrove in the season standings.
A large field of Limited Late Models provided Sunday’s support class and featured some torrid action, as well.
Following preliminary heats, Albion favorite Mark Lueken tooled to victory in the 20 lap feature event, beating Norfolk rival Robert Osborne to the checkers. Norfolk’s Jr. Coover finished 3rd, Mike Kelley of Albion 4th and Norfolk’s Tad Pospisil 5th.
