Flood disaster declaration now official

July 20, 2010

A federal disaster declaration was signed by President Barack Obama last Thursday, July 15, for Boone County and 52 other Nebraska counties that sustained storm and flood damage in June, 2010.

The declaration allows the release of federal money to cover governmental expenses in cleanup and repair from the storms, but it does not extend to personal or business losses.

The state estimated that local governments sustained $20 million in weather-related damage.

Darrel Thorin, county highway superintendent, said Boone County will have expenses of at least $200,000 to repair the collapsed Pilot Knob Road Bridge south of Primrose, as well as costs for repair of bridge approaches, culverts, replacement of road gravel and scouring damage to bridge support pilings.

Albion Keeping Summer Pings Alive

The past two summers have seen Albion without an American Legion Seniors baseball team.
I touched on the subject around this time last year, noting that the missing ping of Legion bats is becoming an all-too-familiar silence in Nebraska’s rural communities.
I followed up that original column with another about the success of several local teams in lower age brackets, the good number of young athletes competing and the vow of several coaches and parents to keep our “summer pastime” alive.
The heart of baseball is indeed still beating in Albion. That’s a testament to the passion and hard work by those parents and coaches and the dedication and sacrifice of the athletes themselves. Read more
