A “Welcome Home” celebration will be held for Neal Claar on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 5 p.m. on Petersburg’s Main Street.
Claar, a Petersburg native, is home while recovering from wounds he sustained in the Afghanistan War.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Temme to hold endowed chair at UNMC

James Temme
Temme, a native of Petersburg, has been appointed to the Charles R. O’Malley Chair for Radiation Science Technology Education.
The endowed faculty chair — the first in the SAHP — was made possible through the generosity of the Charles R. O’Malley Charitable Lead Trust through the New York Community Trust. Trustees worked with the University of Nebraska Foundation to establish the chair.

Laredo Ridge nearly ready for commercial production

Commercial operation of Laredo Ridge wind farm near Petersburg is set to begin Feb. 1, 2011, according to Nebraska Public Power District.
NPPD is currently taking all electricity generated by Laredo Ridge.
When commercial operation begins, the 80 megawatts of power will be shared by four purchasing partners.
NPPD will use 61 megawatts or 76.25 percent of the generated power. Lincoln Electric System will take 10 megawatts or 12.5 percent.
Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN) will take eight megawatts or 10 percent, and the City of Grand Island will take one megawatt or 1.25 percent.
As of 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, NPPD’s Control Center at Doniphan reported that Laredo Ridge was generating 63.8 megawatts of electricity. The utility was also receiving 79 megawatts from Elkhorn Ridge in Knox County and 24 megawatts from the NPPD wind farm at Ainsworth.

Nursing home drive tops goal

Nuring home fund drive meets 0,000 goal.
That was the reaction of Jill Olson, Good Samaritan Society-Albion director of campus relations, after adding up the receipts and pledges for the building fund drive early this week.
The drive began in May to raise $750,000 to build a new 20-bed rehabilitation and skilled care building to replace the outdated north wing of GSS-Wolf Memorial Nursing Home in Albion.
With more than $60,000 in additional pledges and donations received last week, the community fund drive has reached and exceeded the goal.

If the past two years are any indication, it could be Jan. 6. That was the date when the past two New Year’s Babies were born at BCHC.

Boone Central Hosting Holiday Basketball Tournament

Boone Central High School is the host for the 2010 Holiday Basketball Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-29. The rotating event again features girls and boys teams from Boone Central, Gothenburg, Ord and St. Paul. Third place and championship games will be played Wednesday beginning at 12 noon. Boone Central resumes its regular season schedule Friday, Jan. 7, hosting O’Neill. The Cardinal wrestling program returns from the holiday break in a quad at Aurora Tuesday, Jan. 4.
