Zac Lee coming for TeamMates banquet

Former Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback Zac Lee will be special guest speaker at the Boone Central TeamMates Banquet on Sunday, April 10, in Albion.

The banquet will be held at 6 p.m. at the Albion Country Club.

Preceding the banquet, the annual TeamMates Walk-a-Thon will be held at the Boone Central track from 1-2 p.m.

Banquet tickets are available by calling Jeanette Zwiener at 402-395-2134, ext. 155. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Community Club, Village Board to meet

March 29, 2011

Petersburg Community Club will meet Monday, April 4, at 8 p.m. in the Legion Club.

Petersburg Village Board will meet Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at the Village office.

Both meetings are open to the public.

City sales tax receipts up 18% in January

Albion’s city sales tax showed some extra strength in January 2011, jumping 18 percent after a decline in December 2010.

Total sales tax receipts for January 2011 were $45,717, an increase of $6,954 from the January 2010 total of $38,763.

The January 2011 total is the highest January total on record for Albion city sales tax receipts, although it is about $10,100 below the December total of $55,815.

Spring snow decorates trees

Trees in Albion’s residential area were ‘decorated’ by wet snow Monday, March 28, when a spring snowfall blanketed the area.

After several days of temperatures near the freezing mark, the weather was expected to warm into the 50s and 60s later this week.

No decision yet on co-op activities

Boone Central and Newman Grove School Boards met again Monday night, March 28, to discuss a possible cooperative activities program, but there was still no final decision on forming such a program.

In addition to the two boards and administrators, about 20 school patrons, mostly from Newman Grove, attended the joint session in the Newman Grove High School Gym.

The Newman Grove board has not yet taken a formal vote to pursue the co-op with Boone Central.

Home show to have 60 vendors

A total of 68 vendors will be showing their wares at Albion’s Home, Farm and Garden Show this Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

The vendor booths will be located in both the Event Center and the Casey building on the fairgrounds. Several outdoor booths are also planned.

Albion Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event.

A Country Cottage Playhouse, built by John Wayne Construction, will be featured, and several raffles and demonstrations will be held.

Marie Josephine Schrage, 90, of Elgin, died Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.huffmanlevander.com.

Leona M. Siebler

Leona M. Siebler, 92, of Columbus, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Morys Haven in Columbus. Funeral services were held Friday, March 25, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. Evelyn O. Shuler

Evelyn Oline Shuler, 88, of Hastings, died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, in Hastings with the Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings.
