Downtown Albion car show set June 18

Downtown Albion will be the location for the second annual “Smoke n Chrome” Car Show on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted nearly 100 vehicles. This year, it promises to be even bigger. It will include a section for locally owned race cars and cars from the Old Time Racing Association.

Free will donations will be accepted for the food and refreshments, with all proceeds going toward Albion’s July 1 fireworks display at Boone County Raceway.

Easter Egg Hunt for all ages

Albion’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, held Saturday, April 23, was popular with local children. A total of 176 youngsters participated in the event, which was sponsored by the Albion Chamber of Commerce. One of the participants in the youngest age group (above) was Harper Olnes.

Planting progress slow in area

Due to cool and damp conditions, very little progress has been made on spring planting in the Boone County area during April.

Temperatures were well below normal through the first three weeks of the month, with soil temperatures ranging from 44 to 47 degrees. Precipitation of one-half to three-quarters of an inch was recorded in most of the area.

Statewide, air temperatures averaged six to 12 degrees below normal for the week ending April 24. Corn planting was estimated at five percent complete, well behind last year’s 15 to 20 percent average. Cool soil conditions have kept corn from emerging.

School Board accepting applications to fill board vacancy

Boone Central Board of Education held a special meeting in Albion Wednesday night, April 20, to accept the resignation of board member Roger Rozeboom.

Rozeboom had started his four-year term in January, 2011.

In addition to accepting the regsignation, the board voted to fill the vacancy by application. Applications to fill the school board seat will be accepted from Boone Central residents until May 13, 2011. If necessary, this deadline may be extended. Application forms are available from Superintendent Worrell at the school.

Anding completes Heartland Development course

Jill Anding of Albion was one of 55 students representing six states attending the 24th annual Heartland Economic Development Course (EDC) April 10-14, 2011 at the Adams Pointe Conference Center in Blue Springs, MO.

The course allows participants to gain a better understanding of the full range of economic development strategies. The course instructs participants on ways to maximize the use of local and external resources and attempts to impact an understanding of the effects of global competition on local efforts.

Anding serves as executive director of the Albion Economic Development Corporation and Albion Chamber of Commerce.

Zoning change, redevelopment area approved

A zoning change for a one-block area in the Village of Petersburg, as well as a blighted/substandard designation for a large section of Petersburg, were approved by the Boone County Planning Commission during its monthly meeting Monday night, April 25.

The rezoning clears the way for a possible development of the operations and maintenance building for Third Planet Windpower, and the blighted/substandard designation will allow TIF financing for redevelopment in a large portion of the community.

Laredo Ridge ranks high in power output

A recent Nebraska Public Power District report on energy supply from wind farms showed a high performance rating for the Laredo Ridge Wind Farm near Petersburg.

The first two months of official operation for Laredo Ridge were February and March, 2011. During February, the wind farm produced at 61 percent of capacity, compared to budgeted production of 40.5 percent. In March, Laredo Ridge produced at 50.3 percent of capacity, compared to budget of 43.8 percent.

Elkhorn Ridge Wind Farm at Bloomfield produced at 42.4 percent of capacity in February and 38.3 percent in March. NPPD’s Ainsworth wind turbines produced at 44 percent of capacity in February and 34 percent in March.
