‘Green snap’ hits area cornfields hard
July 26, 2011
Strong winds from thunderstorms late Sunday night and early Monday morning, July 10-11, caused a condition known as “green snap” in many Boone County area cornfields.
Some of the storms, covering a 150-mile wide path through central Nebraska, produced wind gusts of 70 miles per hour.
The green snap damage is widespread and will likely reduce yields considerably in some of the affected fields. One agronomist estimated green snap could take 20 to 25 percent off the county’s total potential corn yield this year.
