Halloween Costume Parade set Monday

Petersburg Community Club will be hosting the 2011 Halloween Costume Parade and drawing on Monday, Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the Petersburg Fire Hall.

A drawing will be held for each age group.

Following the costume award ceremony, everyone will parade downtown and collect Halloween goodies from each participating business.

Final accounting told for courthouse remodel

Boone County Commissioners received final settlement documents Monday on the courthouse remodeling project.

The county spent a total of $1,227,658 on the courthouse renovation with general contractor Beckenhauer Construction of Norfolk.

The final total was about $28,500 more than the contractor’s original estimate of $1,199,155, mostly due to change orders and additional components. A final change order for installation of supplemental heat and cooling in the central computer room, was approved several months ago.

Commissioners approved the final payment of $28,358 to Beckenhauer Construction on Monday.

Senator expresses surprise at call for special Legislative session

District 41 State Sen. Kate Sullivan said Monday she was surprised by Gov. Dave Heineman’s announcement that he is calling the Legislature into special session on Nov. 1.

However, she is looking forward to debate on legislation that could give the state authority to change the route of TransCanada’s controversial Keystone XL pipeline, as well as future pipelines.

Sen. Sullivan said she was waiting to receive the governor’s legislative call on Tuesday before commenting on the special session.

School report provides useful data for Boone Central

For Boone Central Public Schools, the 2011 State of the Schools Report will provide useful data for educational improvement, according to Superintendent Cory Worrell.

“Our goal is to be above the state standards in all areas of the Nebraska State Accountability tests,” said Worrell. “The test scores indicate areas where we need to improve. We want to do all we can to improve instruction and raise scores in areas that indicate a need for improvement.”

Partnerships to be noted at TPW commissioning

Partnerships played a key role in developing the new Third Planet Windpower wind farm near Petersburg.

Those partnerships and cooperative efforts will be emphasized by speakers at the commissioning ceremony for TPW Petersburg next Monday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m.

The ceremony will be held at the Joe and Joyce Temme farm (Jeff and Jan Temme residence) five miles east of Petersburg.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman will be among the featured speakers.

Amy’s Flower Basket to open Nov. 1

A new downtown Albion store, Amy’s Flower Basket, will open Nov. 1, 2011 at 102 4th Street.

Amy Bishop will own and operate the flower shop. She said it will be a full-service floral and gift store. It will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

4-H members, leaders earn awards

Boone County 4-H families had pork sandwiches and hot dogs at the annual 4-H Achievement Party held Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Albion.

Many local 4-H members, leaders and volunteers were recognized for their special efforts and years of participation in the 4-H program, said Steve Pritchard, Extension Educator in Boone and Nance counties

Karen Benes (above left) received the 2011 Boone County Heart of 4-H Award as a leader.

Rebecca Dozler (above right) received the Neil Carder Memorial Award for her 4-H activities.

Ruby E. Thewke

Ruby Emilie Thewke, 97, of Albion, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion with Rev. Michael Kern officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Newman Grove. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4-7 p.m. at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

David T. Foss

David Thomas Foss, 26, of Troy, IL, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, in Highland, IL. Service were held Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at the funeral home. David’s wishes were to be cremated. Memorials may be made to his daughter Abigail’s Scholarship Fund.
