There’s no snow on the ground. The sun continues to shine more often than not. Temperatures remain tolerable, to say the least.
Despite all that, it’s time for the winter sports seasons to open around the area and across the state.
To prepare you for the action, you will find our 2011-12 Winter Sports Preview inserted in this edition of the Albion News. Read more

TIME OUT with Joe Flanagan

Big Red look ahead, where to from here?

Nebraska’s 9-3 debut in the Big 10 Conference seems to be raising more questions than providing adequate answers.
“Where does the Husker program go from here” seems to be a popular subject of conversation since last Friday’s victory over Iowa closed the 2011 regular season.
Not just in coffee shops, bars and grocery stores. Not limited even to internet message boards and talk radio shows. Some of the state’s more prominent daily newspaper columnists have joined in, dissecting the present and musing over the future.
We’re four years into Bo Pelini’s tenure in Lincoln and, for the first time - sideline behavior discussions aside - some are beginning to question the direction of the Pelini program. Or, perhaps more accurately, ponder where Bo’s plateau is. Read more

The building structure is expected to start taking shape very soon..

State accountability — Boone Central misses one ‘AYP’ standard

November 22, 2011

Students at Boone Central Public Schools have generally met state standards on Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) standardized tests, but the school did fall short in one category of “adequate yearly progress” (AYP) goals this year.

At the Nov. 15 Boone Central School Board meeting, Jimmy Feeney, middle school principal and curriculum director, reviewed both the NeSA and Northwest Education Association (NWEA) results for standardized tests taken over the past two years.

The one area where Boone Central did not meet AYP federal accountability standards this year was elementary reading performance in one demographic area. This is based on tests taken in the 2010-11 school year.

Jami Scott of Belgrade (left), a member of the University of Nebraska at Kearney ‘Nebraskats’ recruited her brother, Joel, to perform with her in one selection during the group’s concert Sunday evening, Nov. 20, at Boone Central High School in Albion. Joel, an eighth grader at Cedar Rapids, helped out with a dance routine due to the absence of one of the Nebraskats’ members.

The Nebraskats opened their annual winter tour with the Albion concert, sponsored by the Albion Area Arts Council. The 14-member group and their backup band performed medleys from Broadway musicals and from the movie, “The Polar Express.” After spending Sunday night with local families, they continued on their tour with performances at Aurora and Hastings on Monday.
