Workers were using a concrete pumper truck last Friday morning to pour additional concrete outside the new Rae Valley Market store in Petersburg.

Concrete was poured in front of the store and on the northwest corner for the loading docks. 

Green Plains to buy St. Edward elevator

Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq:GPRE) announced today its wholly-owned subsidiary, Green Plains Grain Company, has executed an agreement to acquire the grain elevator assets of KW Carter Company d/b/a JW Grain in St. Edward.

JW Grain has 1.9 million bushels of state-licensed grain storage and is located about 40 miles from the company’s Central City ethanol production facility. The JW Grain facilities, serviced by the Nebraska Central Railroad, can load 25-car unit trains.

Green Plains plans to increase the elevator’s storage capacity by up to one million bushels.

School Board takes initial steps toward building project

Boone Central School Board took initial steps toward a building project by approving four motions during a special meeting Thursday night, Dec. 22.

The board began the meeting with discussion of three aspects of facilities projects:

  • Construction of a new grades 9-12 high school building as recommended by the facilities advisory committee;
  • Renovations to be made in the existing school building at Albion;
  • Disposition of the existing school building at Petersburg.

The board then passed motions to contract with a cost estimator, negotiate for building sites and hire a fiscal agent.

Exterior walls were going up last week for the new 20-bed wing at Good Samaritan Society - Albion, Wolf Memorial Home.

Brester Construction Co. was installing prebuilt wall sections around the building’s perimeter. With favorable weather conditions continuing, additional progress was expected this week.

Norman Lewis Smith, 86 of Albion died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011 at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Albion.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.levanderfuneralhome.com.

Verna J. Benda-Farnik

Verna Jeannette (Fulsaas) Benda-Farnik, 93, formerly of Verdigre and Petersburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011 at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 27 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Raeville. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Jessie Mae (Reiners) Wilson, 83, of St. Edward died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at the Cloverlodge Care Center of St. Edward. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Dec. 22 at the St. Edward Catholic Church. Following a big victory like the Boone Central Lady Cardinals’ dismantling of #2 ranked Minden Dec. 19, coaches are always wary of a letdown.
While the Cards got off to a bit of a sluggish start at Lakeview Thursday, there were no long-term effects to damper a terrific start to the 2011-12 season in Boone Central’s final contest before the holiday break.
Boone Central, playing deep into its roster throughout the game, wore down the host ViQueens and ran away with a 55-29 decision that improved its record to 7-0. Read more
