Petersburg Community Club, Village Board to meet next week

Petersburg Community Club will meet Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at 8 p.m. in the Legion Club.

Petersburg Village Board will meet Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the village office.

Both meetings are open to the public.

Mabel Ragan turns 111

Mabel Ragan of Albion will turn 111 on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.

Mabel resides at Good Samaritan Society Albion, Wolf Memorial Home, and she is currently Nebraska’s oldest resident.

She was born Feb. 1, 1901 on a farm near Newman Grove.

Home, Farm & Garden Show preparations underway

Preparations are continuing for the second Home, Farm & Garden Show to be held Saturday, March 24, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

About 50 vendors had signed up for the show by Jan. 31, according to Theresa Scheffler, chairperson.

Boone County Agricultural Society is the show sponsor.

The day will include a variety of free workshops and demonstrations by vendors.

March 1 is deadline for irrigated land transfers

Landowners seeking to transfer irrigated acres for use in 2012 in the Lower Loup Natural Resources District have until March 1 to apply for those transfers.

NRD Assistant Manager Russell Callan said that there are a number of steps involved in the transfer of irrigation rights from one parcel of land to another. Several restrictions must be met before a transfer can be completed.

Conditions are dry, warm in Boone County

Although it isn’t yet being called a drought, conditions in Nebraska are unusually dry and warm this winter.

The U.S. Drought Monitor lists much of the eastern two-thirds of Nebraska as “abnormally dry” through Jan. 24, 2012.

In the Boone County area, snowfall amounts have been unusually light in December and January, and less than two-tenths of an inch of precipitation has been recorded in the two-month period.

Temperatures have also been unusually warm, and record highs of 70 degrees or more were recorded in several Nebraska communities on Monday, Jan. 30. At the Albion Airport, the official high temperature on Jan. 30 was 69 degrees.

 

SourceGas distribution rates to be subject of PSC hearings

Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) has announced it will hold town hall meetings in five Nebraska communities in SourceGas’ service territory during mid-February.

The first of these meetings will be held Monday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. in Plainview at the old Plainview High School Gym.

Other town hall meetings are set for Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Gering, Thursday, Feb. 16 at McCook and Holdrege, and Friday, Feb. 17, at Wood River.

New president takes helm of Albion Chamber of Commerce

 Progress during the past year and plans for 2012 were highlighted by the Albion Chamber of Commerce and Albion Economic Development Corp. during their joint annual banquet Sunday evening, Jan. 29.

A new president, Lori Krohn, took leadership of the Albion Chamber of Commerce from the 2011 president, Dr. Richard Heidemann.

Performances by Boone Central High School speech team members, and talks by District 41 State Senator Kate Sullivan and Union Pacific Railroad executive Ann Gentle rounded out the program. Some 76 people attended the banquet.

Lee A. Hemmer

Lee A. Hemmer, 81, of Norfolk died Jan. 28, 2012 at his home of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Norfolk. Rev. Daniel Andrews and Rev. Joe Hemmer will concelebrate. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Lindsay. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Church.

Riley A. Meenderink

Riley Andrew Meenderink, 21, of Seattle, WA, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012. Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Roy City Cemetery in Utah. A celebration of life service was held on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Janice R. (McDermet) Maly

Janice R. (McDermet) Maly 84, of Albion, formerly of Fullerton, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 at Tabitha’s Journey House in Lincoln. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 28. Burial followed  at the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.

Deloris M. Kirschmer

Deloris Mae Kirschmer, 84, of O’Neill died Saturday morning, Jan. 28, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Atkinson. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill. Graveside services followed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Orchard.

John R. Burt

John Roger Burt, 87, of Kansas City, MO, died Jan. 22, 2012 at St. Joseph Medical Center. Memorial services were held Saturday, Jan. 28 at Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, MO.
