Another year of excellence in local high school athletics was reflected by the release last week of the 2013-14 Class C All-Sports standings by the Omaha World-Herald.
Boone Central/Newman Grove finished eighth in the Class C standings for combined girls/boys sports. In standings determined by boys sports only, BC/NG placed seventh. Lady Cardinal programs were 27th in girls only standings. The standings include all teams competing in Classes C1 and C2 during the calendar school year.
Kearney Catholic won a third straight all-sports championship in Class C by the narrowest of margins. The Stars were awarded 75.5 points to 75.0 for Hastings St. Celecia. Columbus Scotus was close behind in third with 71.0.
The OWH All-Sports point system awards 20 points for first place in football. volleyball and basketball, 15 for track and wrestling and 10 for all other sports. The scoring value in each sport diminishes with order of finish: 20-18-16, 15-13.5-12, 10-9-8. Final OWH ratings are the basis for All-Sports scoring in football, volleyball, softball, basketball, baseball and soccer. State meet placing dictates points in other sports. Schools in cooperative sponsorships receive equal splits.
