Cards corral Catholic – on to playoffs

Zac Glidden romps through KnightsThere really shouldn’t have been any questions or lingering doubts about Boone Cental/Newman Grove at this point of the season.
But, for any remaining skeptics, the Class C1 #1 Cardinals provided all the answers Oct. 23 with a 32-16 victory over #3 Norfolk Catholic in Albion.
BC/NG wrapped up a 9-0 regular season and claimed the C1-3 District championship.
The Cards have bigger goals in mind, however, such as the school’s second state title. They begin that quest Friday as the overall #2 seed in the C1 bracket, hosting #15 Milford-Dorchester (6-3) at 7 p.m.

Boone Central/Newman Grove showed its mettle in varied fashion Thursday, taking early leads of 6-0 and 12-3 over Catholic, then responding to a 16-12 deficit early in the second half with an immediate TD drive. The Cardinals sealed the decision with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
BC/NG did it by ground and by air, rushing for 209 yards and three touchdowns and passing for 230 and two scores. The hosts had a 439-231 total yardage advantage on the Knights.
Cardinal Coach Arnie Johnson was pleased with the effort and feels it will provide his team momentum for its playoff drive.
“There were a lot of good things to like about this game,” Johnson said. “We were able to make big plays when needed and we liked the way our defense seemed to stiffen as the game progressed.
“We really liked the way we answered their go-ahead score in the third quarter.
“If I was to say what I was most pleased with, it was the way our line and backs played in our power game,” he praised. “Norfolk Catholic took away a lot of what we do, but if we can build on what we were doing at the line of scrimmage, we’ll be fine.
“I told everybody (media) before the game that we have receivers and we have backs – the big question mark was the line. I think our line played fantastic.
“We were a confident football team, but now I think we’re even more confident.”
Indeed. Scoring the final 20 points against a previously-undefeated opponent is a definite confidence-builder.
