Despite short prep time for many of its members, the Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling team recorded a solid third-place finish in Saturday’s O’Neill Invitational.
Valentine (193) outscored Chamberlain, SD (169) to win the team championship of the season-opening meet. Class C1 state football finalists Boone Central/Newman Grove and Norfolk Catholic each scored 93 points to pace the remaining 10 teams in the tourney field.
“With the football players having only five practices and definitely not in ‘wrestling shape,’ the young men gave a good accounting of themselves,” acknowledged Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “Another problem with the short prep time was that some guys could not get down to their planned weight, which caused us to be unable to fill a few classes we would have with a full three weeks of practice.
“While being in the state football finals hurts us at the beginning of the season, the benefits, in the long run, far outweigh the problems in the short haul.”
Boone Central/Newman Grove had competitors in nine of 14 weight classes at O’Neill, with six Cardinals – Jon Merten (1st), Trey Schafer (2nd), Garrett Cornwell (3rd), Bryton Fowlkes (3rd), Tyson Haddix (4th) and Will Grape (4th) – placing in the top four.
Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestlers will continue to hone their condition and skills in dual action this week, hosting Northwest Tuesday and traveling to Creighton Thursday.
