A realistic learning experience was part of the school day at Boone Central High School last Friday, Sept. 30.

That morning, students watched as fellow classmates were extricated from two cars that had been in an apparent accident on Fifth Street just outside the school.

Although make-up was used on the participating students to make their injuries seem as realistic as possible, it wasn’t real. No one had been harmed.

The simulation was arranged as a learning experience — a way to put a realistic image on potential outcomes that face students every day, and to illustrate the need for responsible driving.

Only a few fields of high moisture corn were being harvested last week in the Boone County area, but the harvest pace was expected to pick up this week.

Many soybean fields are rapidly drying down into harvest range, and recent dry and sunny weather is pushing the process along.

An early load of dryland soybeans from Boone County Monday tested at 10.5 percent moisture with a yield estimate of 60 to 62 bushels per acre, according to one area agronomist.

If weather stays dry, many area farmers could be harvesting soybeans by the end of this week.
