Colin Koeppen prepares to fly his powered parachute last summer.
No it’s not a bird, no it’s not a plane. It’s Colin Koeppen, rural Boone County resident, flying his powered parachute all over Boone County.

Koeppen bought the early 1990 model, single-seated powered parachute last fall, but was unable to take it up until this past spring. Last winter, he taught himself how to fly the parachute and by Easter Sunday, the wind was calm and he felt comfortable enough to get in and try it out for the first time.

“Every flight is an adventure,” remarked Koeppen.

The parachute will go about 30 miles per hour and has enough gas for about an hour and 15 minutes of flying.

Jami Scott of Belgrade (left), a member of the University of Nebraska at Kearney ‘Nebraskats’ recruited her brother, Joel, to perform with her in one selection during the group’s concert Sunday evening, Nov. 20, at Boone Central High School in Albion. Joel, an eighth grader at Cedar Rapids, helped out with a dance routine due to the absence of one of the Nebraskats’ members.

The Nebraskats opened their annual winter tour with the Albion concert, sponsored by the Albion Area Arts Council. The 14-member group and their backup band performed medleys from Broadway musicals and from the movie, “The Polar Express.” After spending Sunday night with local families, they continued on their tour with performances at Aurora and Hastings on Monday.

On Veterans Day, the longtime Albion resident was asked to step forward and be recognized with the local “Living Veteran” award.

“I was very surprised and proud to be honored,” said Wilson, a veteran of the Korean War. “There are so many great volunteers who serve in our veterans’ groups.”

He received the award from Dale Bowman, representing Manderson Lehr American Legion Post 163 and VFW Post 736, during the annual Veterans Day program at the Boone Central High School Gym. After that program, a flag-raising ceremony was held in his honor at Albion’s downtown mini-park.

Semi tractor-trailer is loaded from a grain cart at the Dean Hamling farm.
Dozens of friends and neighbors brought their semi tractor-trailers, combines, tractors and grain carts to the Dean Hamling farm southeast of Cedar Rapids last Thursday morning, Oct. 27.

Their purpose was to harvest corn for fellow farmer Dean Hamling, who underwent a stem cell transplant this week at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, for Hodgkins lymphoma.

Friends organized the harvest bee after learning that Hamling must spend six weeks in isolation after the procedure. That meant Hamling likely wouldn’t be able to finish up the fall harvest on his own.

A total of about 50 people brought 16 semi tractor-trailers, six combines, and nine tractors with grain carts. They harvested, hauled and stored the corn from 200 acres in about five hours.
