Courthouse project back on drawing board

It’s back to the drawing board for the proposed Boone County Courthouse expansion.
Commissioners on Monday signed an amended contract with their architects, Cannon Moss Brygger & Associates, and asked for new plans on a smaller courtroom addition at the west end of the existing courthouse.
New Design Contract
The amended architecture contract includes a maximum cost of $9,650 for revised plans and specifications to be completed as soon as possible. Commissioners Hank Thieman and Jerry Tisthammer voted in favor of the amended contract, while Commissioner Tom Schuele voted against it.
The county board will meet with architects Larry Goldberg and Brad Kessler next Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. to discuss the revised plans.

Two Boone Countians to travel on next Honor Flight

Two more Boone County World War II era veterans will be traveling aboard the next Heartland Honor Flight on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Raymond (Ray) Prothman of rural Albion and Robert (Bob) Watts of Cedar Rapids will board the flight to Washington, DC, at Eppley Airfield, Omaha, early next Wednesday morning. After arriving at Dulles Airport, Washington, DC, they will board buses for a tour of the World War II Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and other sites of interest.
They will go to Omaha on Nov. 18 to attend a dinner in honor of all World War II veterans planning to make the trip.
Boone County delegation seeks highway improvements

A delegation from Boone County traveled to South Sioux City, NE to attend the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) District 3 planning meeting Tuesday night, Oct. 28.
Shirley Petsche, Andrew Devine, Shannon Landauer, Robert Racek and Hank Thieman all made the trip to support highway maintenance and improvements in the county.
NDOR Director John Craig, District 3 Commissioner John Kingsbury, District 3 Engineer Kris Winters, and Randy Peters of the NDOR planning team gave the 50-60 attendees an overview of the 2009 fiscal year roads program and described funding concerns for the district and the state. Read more
Veterans Day program here Nov. 11

Albion’s annual Veterans Day program will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. in the Boone Central High School Gym.
Guest speaker for the program will be Albion attorney Larry Bird. The Boone Central High School Band and individual students will participate in the program. Local veterans’ organizations will provide the Color Guard. Russ Nore will serve as master of ceremonies.
A highlight of the ceremony will be the announcement of a Living Veteran award, and a ceremony honoring this veteran will be held at the downtown mini-park after the ceremony.

Courthouse expansion put on hold

Boone County Commissioners on Monday decided to put the current courthouse expansion plans on hold due to possible future changes in staffing and space requirements for Social Services offices administered by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
County Board Chairman Hank Thieman said he was notified last week by a Social Services official of future changes in the agency that would include staff reductions and the likely closing of the Boone County office by 2010. Read more
Punkin Chunkin’ rescheduled for Sunday

Due to recent rainfall and muddy fields in the area, the Petersburg Community Club decided last week to postpone its annual Punkin Chunkin’TM event, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26.
Punkin Chunkin’ TM has been rescheduled for this Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. in a field just east of Petersburg along Highway 91.
