Boone-Nance-Merrick now share emergency manager

With approval of an interlocal agreement Monday, Boone County officially joined with Nance and Merrick counties for emergency management services.

Boone County Commissioners approved the agreement on a unanimous vote.

A committee of representatives from all three counties have been formulating the interlocal agreement for several months. It is effective through the 2013-14 fiscal year. They have already hired Jan Zurcher of Columbus, a former Red Cross employee, as the three-county emergency manager.

Zurcher began her duties Jan. 3, 2012. She will be required to move from Columbus into one of the three participating counties by July 1, 2012.

Spalding community can gain ownership of Friendship Villa

Transfer of ownership of the former Friendship Villa Nursing Home to the Spalding community was the topic of a Jan. 4 meeting in Elkhorn, NE, between Spalding representatives and Vetter Health Services officials.

At that meeting, Jack Vetter, president of Vetter Health Services, agreed to transfer ownership and rights to the nursing home property to the community.

Timeline discussed for the transfer was within 90 days. Cost of the property had not yet been determined.

Bleacher cover project reaches funding goal

Several recent donations helped reach the fundraising goal for the bleacher shelter project at Albion’s Legion baseball field.

A total of $1,700 has been contributed since Dec. 21, 2011, to put the fund drive over the top in local contributions.

Carol Zoucha, rural Petersburg, donated $1,000 in memory of her late husband, Bob Zoucha. Other donations came from Jeff Briese, Helena Chemical Co. and Leon Magsamen.

Although the $52,000 goal has been met, American Legion Post 162 is still accepting funds for additional field improvements. Contact Arthur Struebing at Boone County Bank or Lowell Imus, project coordinator, for information.

Planning Board approves setback changes

January 3, 2012

During its monthly meeting on Dec. 27, the Boone County Planning Commission approved recommendations to reduce setback distance for structures near county roads, and for a lot split that could make way for a rural residence.

The planning board also scheduled a discussion at its next meeting on reducing setback distances required for stockpiling of manure from livestock feeding operations.

School Board takes initial steps toward building project

December 27, 2011

Boone Central School Board took initial steps toward a building project by approving four motions during a special meeting Thursday night, Dec. 22.

The board began the meeting with discussion of three aspects of facilities projects:

  • Construction of a new grades 9-12 high school building as recommended by the facilities advisory committee;
  • Renovations to be made in the existing school building at Albion;
  • Disposition of the existing school building at Petersburg.

The board then passed motions to contract with a cost estimator, negotiate for building sites and hire a fiscal agent.

Local businesses to welcome New Year’s Baby

As the new year begins, area residents await the arrival of the 2012 New Year’s Baby at Boone County Health Center.

City Council sets Jan. 14 completion date for new well

Albion City Council reviewed progress on the new city water well last week and acted on a change order to require completion of the well project by Jan. 14, 2012.

The water well project has been pending since last summer when a price was negotiated with the contractor, Grosch Irrigataion.

The original completion date was set for Dec. 17, 2011, but state approvals were delayed and subcontractors were unable to start the project in the time frame that was originally planned.

Subcontractors are now finishing their work on the well house, and a change order specifying completion date has been signed by the contractor.

Commissioners get first estimates on ambulance repair

December 20, 2011

Boone County Commissioners on Monday began discussions with their insurance carrier, Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association (NIRMA), for repair or replacement of the county ambulance.

The ambulance was damaged in a Nov. 28 two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highways 81 and 34 near York. Driver of the other vehicle was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.

Commissioners held a lengthy discussion Monday with Shellie Rathjen of Conrad Fire Equipment and Rusty Bruland, ambulance supervisor, about repair or replacement of the ambulance.
